Chapter Three

The light next to my bed was bright. It kept me awake because I wasn't allowed to turn it off. If they couldn't see me in the dark then I was considered a threat because they couldn't tell what I was doing. Yeah right, like they couldn't see a six foot tall pole with the loudest footsteps ever. It was their prerogative though.

When I finally fell asleep It was around Three, according to the alarm clock next to me. I closed my eyes and when I opened them again it was Eight. Not bad, five hours of sleep. It was more time allotted than the past week in sleep. I sat up in bed, noticing that Ava was standing at the door watching me. I almost jumped at the sight. Not only did she watch me get up, but the morning wood was there.

"Damn! You scared the Shit out of me!" I say a little loudly.

"Damn! Why are you yelling? Some people are still sleeping you know." She replies coldly.

I scratch my head and look over to my clothes.

"Can you at least let me get dressed... Alone?"

"No."

There was my answer.

"I'm actually supposed to help you get dressed until you take initiation. I just don't want to and I know you don't either."

Well thank god. The one I don't believe in. That was one thing that never got me. Religion. I didn't think that there was some power that created us, if there is a god its the universe itself. We are evolved from simple single celled organisms, and now we are the most advanced civilization we know about, and that shit about there not being aliens, fuck that. There are most definitely aliens, we can't be the only Species to develop the mental capacity of Fifteen Percent. There's most definitely a species that can store over One Million Gigabytes into their memories.

I get up and start getting dressed. Putting on some dark slim jeans and a white hoodie. I don't even bother with putting on a shirt under. After that I put on socks and then slip on my shoes. I tuck the laces into the side and stand up. After stretching for a couple minutes to kill some time, I start walking to the door. Ava opens it up and ushers me out. I smell the fresh autumn breeze on my face and walk out the door. She follows me.

There are a couple people in the watch towers scattered around the town already. Which they might have stayed up all night, who knows? They are armed with semi automatic rifles in the case of a zombie. Ava was telling me about the fairly frequent visits from a horde. They would kill 10-15 zombies and the rest would flee, gathering more zombies for the next attack.

I walked with Ava until we reached the Cafeteria. She opened the door for me again and I walked in. The fresh smell of fake bacon and eggs made me excited. I grabbed a foam bowl and walked over to the server. She was an older woman, probably late 50's, who had curly red hair that went down to her shoulders. She also had the nicest smile I have ever seen. She put two scoops of eggs and crumbled bacon over the top. I walked away after saying thanks and poured myself a glass of water. I sat down with Ava.

"So does everyone have a job here?" I ask her.

"Yes and no. Some people just stay here to attend the base while others have assigned jobs to do. The people who have guns don't have jobs, but they offered to keep the fort safe, so they sit up there all day, very seldom leaving post." She takes a bite of eggs and bacon. "If they do leave post they have a switch take their post for a couple minutes."

So if I stayed here I would have a job. I would hope for something like 'Pro Gamer' or 'Lazy Bum' but that would not happen knowing that this compound was worth staying. I would have a stupid job like farmer or some shit that makes me want to not stay here. This place is just too good to be true. Its a once in a zombie filled lifetime chance.

"We are putting you on the Scout Team, with me and Fenix." She says.

I stopped eating for a second. I wasn't going to do that. I am not going into the nightmare that took my brother.

"No." I say.

"You dont have a choice, and you will be a big help. You know the area more than Fenix and I do. We all came from the south. Moving towards solidus, and they denied our entry." \

"Well... Whats in it for me?"

"Food, shelter, protection, and if you wanted booze or women we could cover you." She says and then Winks at me.

I didn't know if I should things she lying or if she was legitimately flirting with me. Whatever it was booze and women sounded good, you know, along with food, shelter, and protection. So I was in.

"I'm in."

"Good, because you still didn't have a choice." She then smiles wickedly. Then starts laughing and I laugh along with her. I guess this was my new life. A good life, especially in the Zombie Apocalypse. So I will gladly take the lotto ticket and win that 750 Million dollars. That's what this felt like.

Too good to be true, but it was true.
