Ava and I ran out the cafeteria doors. My pistol, heavy in my hands, was loaded. We looked around for the source of the gunshots. We finally saw a group of people. Fenix and four others were playing with firecrackers. They laughed and giggled and snickered. One of the men in the guard tower were laughing too. Ava had already stormed over to them. You could tell she was yelling at them because they sat there in full attention.
My pistol which I had been holding, was now at my side. I decided to put it into my holster. I stood there and watched Ava and the other men. They all looked down and kicked at the dirt. Then I heard Ava say something.
"Don't do it again!"
"We wont." The group replies.
Then with that Ava spun on her foot and started walking towards me. She stopped in front of me. Then she looked at my hands. They were shaking. I was so anxious because I thought there was going to be a fire fight or some sort of showdown. There wasn't, and I tried breathing to calm myself down. I looked at Ava.
"Shucks! We didn't have to storm into battle!" She said laughing. I looked at her and smiled. We then walked back into the cafeteria and started eating again. The song that was playing had changed while we were outside. This one I didn't know the name of. Though it was new because the singer was using synthesizers and auto tune. We sat down and finished our breakfast. After that we talked for a while. Mainly about how life was before the whole end of the world.
Ava was actually still in college and played basketball. She wasn't the smartest in the box, but she had mad math skills. She could calculate distances when shooting the ball. She was about to graduate with a degree in accounting. Well what she did was more than I did in my life.
After that it was time to do our second job of today. I had to clean the bathrooms. Since we had running water and electricity most people took care of the bathroom. There wasn't much to clean besides the smell of shit. I sprayed air freshener all over and then put some car scenty things on the little coat racks. I took a deep breath and then walked out of the bathroom.
I walked to my room. Along the way I stopped by the laundry room and grabbed my clothes. When I got back I started folding everything and putting it away. I grabbed a stick of deodorant and rubbed some on. After doing that I laid down on my bed. Looking up through the skylight. I put may arms behind my head. This was the good life, well, a good post apocalypse life. I grabbed my mp3 player and turned on my favorite playlist. The first song that played was; 'Say It Ain't So' By Weezer. I fell asleep to that song. Into a great nap.

When I woke up I had rolled over onto my side. It was night time. I slept through the day so It looks like I'm going to have night shifts. I got up and put on a hoodie. Still wearing my jeans and boots. It got colder at night, like almost 50 degrees. I walked outside and went to work on the new building. We were building a giant freezer to keep food stores. We had most of the outside done and we scavenged a bunch of cooling units. I had already installed 3 of the 50. There were about 20 installed already. The walls were made of a fiberglass layer backed with wood and metal to insulate.
I went to work installing the units. I had three installed and I was on the fourth. After fiddling with the placement I used the wrench to tighten the bolts. It was then stuck to the wall. All of us had to do at least 3 units. I went to flip the switch to turn it on. Then I noticed it was unplugged. I walked to the other side of the room and plugged it in to the giant surge protector. I walked over and clicked the switch. It didn't come one. I flicked the switch again. Nothing. I flicked it a third time. This time it kicked in. I tried to cut it off, but it wouldn't turn off. Getting angry I hit it with the wrench. This time it paused for a second.
Then in a split second a giant fiery explosion lit up and sent me flying into the wall on the other side of the room. I hit the wall and my breath was taken from me. I felt pieces of shrapnel hit my body. One just barely grazed my cheek causing a scratch from my lip to my ear. I felt the blood fall down my face. A shard of glass flew and hit me in the stomach. It was sticking out and I felt the warmth cover my lower body. I started to black out.
Some people ran in with fire extinguishers. They stopped the fire and then someone else started carrying me. The last thing I saw was Ava, leaning down and kissing my cheek.
