Chapter Two

The compound was home to about 10 survivors. They had this compound locked down tight with electric fences and razor wire. After Ava undid the tape around my arms she took me on a tour. We stopped by the cafeteria on the way there. The room was Stuffy, and smelt like tuna, but the food was great. Whats better than Ramen Noodles and Stuffed cheese bread sticks? She was explaining that they had been here since the plague started.

After they gathered military weapons and supplies they holed up in a small military camp that was abandoned. They repaired the broken fences and killed the zombies that were inside. Since they have electrified the wire no zombie has been able to rip open the fence. Their brains would be boiled and they would lose all thoughts. They would just be a corpse that could move their arms and legs.

"There were more of us. More than just the ten." Ava says.

So there were more than just the 10 people occupying this base. I wonder how they died or whatever, but I think that I probably shouldn't ask.

"They were killed in the night, by a band of people who attacked us and took all our food. The ten of us that are left were out scavenging that night. We got back and a building was one fire and a piece of fence was broke down. The dead had already started munching on my friends. There was nothing I could do. I let them die." She says. I saw the tears welling in her eyes.

"Hey. Honestly I don't know what happened, but I know it wasn't your fault." I respond to her, hoping for her to stop crying. I hate it when people cry. I cry when people cry. Hell, I used to cry to Disney movies. I'm a big baby and a person with a big heart. That's what got my brother killed. We were running from the zombies. There were at least 6 zombies chasing us. He told me to keep going. I didn't want him to die so I dived into the zombies and yelled at him to get him to run. He just pulled me off and threw me away.

You wouldn't guess what happened next. He tripped and fell into the zombies dying. I made him get close to them. He tried saving me when I was trying to save him. Damn heart, it will lead to the death of me. There was still time to correct that. I didn't want to be a heartless bastard, but I didn't want to be a moron either. She looked at me.

"Hows Dinner?" She says smiling.

"Its Great. Ramen noodles are the shit."

"That's the only thing we have right now, so eat up."

There was a pause as I continued to eat my food, grateful for her giving me it. I really needed to go to the bathroom, and a shower would be well appreciated, but I didn't know if they had running water. I thought about a nice hot shower, cleaning the mud, sweat, and tears from my body. I also stunk so bad I bet the zombies were afraid to get near me. I also have a habit of checking myself out.

"Do you guys have showers and bathrooms?" I ask, guessing it was going to be a no.

"Yeah, but since you're new someone has to watch you."

"What?"

"Someone has to watch you take a shower. Don't worry its not gonna be me."

I have to be watched while taking a shower? What the fuck is this? I guess I can understand because its the zombie apocalypse, but damn, being watched while you're taking a shower. That was a whole other layer of lack of trust. If I had to be watched I guess I can make it quick, but I also have no clothes.

"Um... What About clothes?" I ask Ava.

"We have military uniforms. I can see if we have any other clothes laying around. What size do you wear?"

"Small."

I was skinny and muscular. So having to buy big sizes of clothes was never a problem. However, since I was 6 Foot tall and wore a size 14 in shoes, that's where most of my money went. Moneys not a problem anymore though. If I really wanted to I could find a shoe store and just take some nice new pairs of shoes. I wasn't going back to the city though.

I stood up and threw away my foam bowl and plastic utensils. She stood up with me and started walking towards the door. The motioned for me to come with her. I followed closely behind. As we made our way to the shower houses we stopped by a barrack and she grabbed some clothes for me. There was a white v-neck shirt, a black zip-up hoodie, some skinny blue jeans, and a pair of shoes that were far too small. I just kept my high top skate shoes.

When we got there she yelled for someone named Fenix. He was a shorter muscular man with A small beard and long shaggy blonde hair. He walked and greeted me into the compound.

"I'm not going to be watching you close, you have a curtain, but I have to check on you every couple of minutes." He assures me.

Music to my ears. I wasn't going to be watched while taking a shower. Well not necessarily. I stepped in and sat my clothes on the bench. I grabbed the bottle of shampoo and a bottle of body wash. I looked in the mirror before I got undressed and in the shower. My Curly brown hair was dusty and almost looked blonde. My eyes were always the best feature about me. They were a yellow gold color and always shiny. Under my thick rimmed nerd glasses they looked even shinier. My arms were slumped, especially my left arm. Where the bandage felt like it was the only thing holding my arm and body together.

I stepped in the shower and then undressed, throwing my clothes on the floor by the sink. I turned on the water, it was hot, and let it run down my neck and back. Cleansing myself from the pain I felt before I came here.
