Prologue
The deep grey waves crashed into the cliff face the droplets of rain and the storm of wind caused the land to be eerie. The trees were sweeping across the sky, leaves flying in all directions. The sun was nowhere to be seen the clouds a pattern that changes in every second. Umbrellas and plastic bottles and paper were swept into the blistering wind.
A small glove of a child was spread across the flooded concrete paths drowned the colour fading more and more until it is just an invisible grey. A caravan of sorts is right by the cliff rocking vigorously from side to side anyone who saw this would expect it to fall off the cliff and to be lost in the sweeping sea drawing its components apart until it became a lump of rusty metal. Looking closer you would see that the caravan was in fact a burger van.
A young woman selling burgers was at the side of the road the meaty smell disgusted her but she had no choice. The metal box called a burger van was a place she had no wish to be in the cold but the choice was never hers to choose in the first place and to leave would mean certain death from starvation.
Her slightly tanned skin glowed un-expectantly in the greasy environment. Her grey-blue eyes sparkled she was youthful and pretty and it didn’t match her surroundings.
In the winter months she worked as a burger van girl and in the summer she sold the ice cream. She is alone so alone orphaned at birth with no family she was still living at the orphanage and paid minimum for the work in the vans.
At 18 she hardly had a life except work, sleep and showers. The meaty smell is imbedded in her skin causing the other children at the orphanage to stay away.
She was disgusting the older children remember how kind she used to be but she had been sinking into a depression for months now deeper and deeper until she would hardly talk.
She was a small insignificant part of life for everyone else at the orphanage. She had no particular friends well actually she had no friends at all. She was nobody someone who would be alone until kicked out of the orphanage and after that well all she had would probably be homeless and go to the closest city and hope that life will get better.
Chapter 1
The long walk to the burger van, the same stretch of miles that I walk daily today was the same as usual, though I had to run most of the way up the hill and round the valley towards the tourist town an hours walk from the orphanage because of the deep roar and pound of the rain punching the concrete paths.
Most of the money earned at the burger van was donated to the orphanage the rest hidden beneath a loose bit of skirting board hidden in a Jaffa cake box. A simple but effective place to hide a load of different items that are precious but I have never found anything important that would be worth hiding away in the darkest corner of my room.
I never came with anything just dropped off on a doorstep left in the blistering cold to be found the next morning in a thick blanket and a note with all my details name and date of birth. I was never shown the letter but one night I had crept into the offices and found a little note at the bottom saying “Bye-bye sweetie”.
Inside the rusty old van I found a note stuck to the top of the greasy oven on it were some simple instructions. They were hardy illegible because of the scrawled writing and grease blots.
Heather
I won't be any assistance today but you know what to do if anything is stolen you will regret the day you started working here
Darren.
The usual threats, oh how I will miss it when you are six feet under and can’t give me these simple pleasures in life the laugh that echoed through the van was chilling as if the world really thought I could kill someone.
