(Emma's POV)

I groan as I wake up, opening my eyes slowly. My head is pounding and my wrists are burning. I take in my surroundings and notice that I'm in an eerie cell. My wrists are bound with thick metal chains. I hear scurrying of tiny rodents running around and the sound of leaking water is echoeing and bouncing off of the walls.

How did I get in here? I ponder. Then I remember. After being taken away from my home in that awful wagon, we were at the docks, I remember seeing a ship then blackness. I must have been knocked out so I wouldn't put up a fight. That was probably a good idea on their part. But now I'm here, stuck in a dungeon, in a cell.

A multitude of questions arouse my mind.

Am I in Ireland?

Where are my parents? Are they alright?

Are the servants and members of court safe?

Before I can question these circumstances any further I hear heavy footsteps and the rattling of keys. I slowly stand up, holding my head as I do. I grip onto the metal bars surrounding me to regain my balance. A dark figure comes around a corner and they walk towards my cell.

"I see someone awoke from their beauty sleep," The man says, he's a guard I presume, judging by his wardobe choice. I stay silent. He's on the older side and he has a devious smile. "You're a silent one, aye?" Again, silence. He suddenly reaches his hand through one of the gaps between the bars and grabs me by the arm pulling me directly against the bars with force. "If I say something to you, I expect you to answer. Understood?" I breath heavily and squeeze my eyes shut afraid of what he might do.

"Leave her alone, mate," a familiar voice says calmly. Without hesitation the guard releases his hold on me and I stumble backwards. He leaves the room and I look at the man whom 'rescued' me. Killian. He approaches my cell and looks at me, with concern written all over his face. "Are you okay, love?" His voice is soft and steady, almost sounding kind.

"Considering I was just ripped away from my home and family, no. No, I am not okay," I reply with as much hatred as I can muster.

(Killian' POV)

"I know," I sigh. "But there's nothing that can be done, Swan." I freeze as I realize my mistake. Swan, is a name I used to call her, when we were much younger. She looks up at me with an expression I can't read.

"Swan?" She says hesitantly. "You remember...?"

{flash back}

I knocked on Emma's bedroom door softly and quietly, just in case she was still asleep.

"Come in," her soft voice called out. I silently opened the door and looked at the young blonde girl sitting at the edge of her bed. "Killian," she smiled at the sight of me.

"Emma," I smiled too. "Happy birthday!" I quickly walked over to her and hugged her tightly, and she hugged me as well. It was her seventh birthday, and I was two years older than her.

"Thank you,"

"Look, I got you something," I fumbled around in my pocket, searching for the item I had personally picked out for her. I felt a small chain and pulled it out gently. I held it out for her and her face beamed with happiness and mine with pride. It was a dainty necklace with a silver chain, in the center was a majestic swan dangling down. "Swan's are magnificent, graceful, playful, brave, confident, and beautiful, which is why I got this for you. Emma, you are all of those things and more. You're my Swan." I had never seen her smile as widely as she did then, in that moment I felt like the whole world belonged to me and everything was perfect. She quickly kissed my cheek and a blush creeped upon her face.

"Thank you so much, Killy," she glanced down at the necklace. "I love it! Could you put it on me?" And so I did.

{end flash back}

I glance away from her intense stare, there's no hiding the fact that I remember her, so I might as well tell her. "Of course I remember, Emma." Her facial expression softens.

"T-then why..." I can see tears building up in her fantastically green eyes. "Why did you do this?" The pain and innocence in hers eyes leaves a hole in my heart.

"I already told you, love. I had no choice, it was my parents orders."

"You are your own person. Don't you think it's time you grew up and thought for yourself?" Her tone was now sharp and a single tear trickled down her cheek but she quickly wiped it away.

"I'm sor-"

She cuts me off and shakes her head. "Don't. Please, just leave me alone." She see's that I haven't moved and she gives me a pleading look. I sigh and give in.

"I'll come back as soon as I'm able to, goodbye." I give her a slight wave and retreat. As I round the corner I can hear her sobs, she was holding them in around me so as not to give into showing herself at a vulnerable time, as if I'd ever use it against her.

Emma was right, I am my own person, I should be able to make my own choices. But am I brave enough?

One hour later

"Father!" I shout through the hallways as I see him. He stops in his tracks and turns to face me, a smile on his face. As I near him, he looks normal as ever, as if nothing happened last night, as if we didn't storm the English castle and kidnap it's princess.

"Hello, Killian," he greets me warmly and pats me on the back, which only gets him a glare in return. "You seem distressed, is something wrong?"

"Yes, something's wrong! Emma is locked up in the dungeon, alone. That's not proper treatment for a princess." I clench my fists while speaking.

"Ah, I see you remember her name. Well, she's a prisoner here, not a princess," his voice is alarmingly calm.

"No, she is a princess. But why, father? Why is she here?"

"Our countries our enemies,"

"That's no excuse."

"You'll find out, sometime in the future." Father's voice stiffens up and he puts on a stern formality. I can't stand up to him when he's like that, I just can't.

I turn on my heels in frustration and go for a walk to clear my mind.
