Sarah Jane Smith instantly recognised the low grinding of an engine and her heart skipped a beat. There was only one ship she knew could ever make that noise. A lump in her throat, she slowly ventured out to see between the trees, and there it was.
The blue police box that she had known for so long but not seen. A childish smile crept over her face and she edged a bit closer. Surely it could only be him? She held her breath as the door opened and watched to see....children? Why would the doctor bring them here? A worrying thought occurred to her. Surely there wasn't any danger here? No. that's why she had come here. She'd only just taken care of those gremlin-wolves. The doctor as she knew him wouldn't bring children somewhere to fight. Before she overthought the issue, she watched for a minute more just to make sure, and the children seemed to spread out to find their own areas and then she could see the doctor.
She was shocked to see he looked different at first. She had seen the doctor with white hair, a long scarf, several long coats and a suit and tie, but now he looked even younger than last time. This puppy-like man was new to her, but he was still the doctor. After her brain processed the initial change, her face broke into a huge, joyful smile as he recognised her moments after. He raised one finger towards her, grinning . "Don't tell me, Sarah Jane Smith!" And in a joyful mix of excitement and disbelief, she laughed and ran in for a hug. He wasn't quite as tall and skinny as last time, but being quite small, her feet still left the ground. "What happened to you?" She asked happily when she was standing again.

"Oh of course! Yeah, new face. Nearly burned the TARDIS, but I've discovered it involves some new, cool things." He motioned to his red bow tie, prompting a grin. What about you?" He asked with fondness "I thought were at home with Luke."
Sarah Jane filled him in excitedly, about how she'd taken up fighting evil by herself after travelling with him, even found more children who could help her, and she'd only just finished with the gremlin-wolves here. And soon enough the doctor was telling her about the ordeal with the vampires. The sun was high and the Doctor and Sarah passed the time by mostly talking about their young companions. Sarah's adopted son Luke and a group of his friends were helpful and willing companions, she said. Maybe in the future the group the doctor had chosen would be the same. She asked the doctor why he had chosen them, and he said it was more like they had been there and that's exactly why he knew they could help him.
He spoke slowly"Yesterday, when we...escaped the vampires, Sam lost his brother."
Sarah Jane looked up sympathetically "Is that why you're here?"
"Sometimes I don't know if I'd be better off just leaving people alone, then maybe I wouldn't put people in danger"
"Doctor" she stopped walking firmly "You save people every day. I've travelled with you, and I've seen the good you do. You do your best to save everyone,  but we all have times where things happen and it's not our choice. Maybe you need someone with you so you don't blame yourself" she nudged his arm, and he felt a little better when he smiled "you could be right"
They kept passing time by telling stories and discussing things. They enjoyed the fact that they had been somehow brought together again, as the doctor knew his hold on the companions he had known had slipped and it was a comfort to reach one of them again. He was glad to see Sarah and decided to enjoy this moment while the children took time to recuperate. They deserved that.

Sherlock and John were sitting on the hill together when Amelia and Rory came into view to put her plan into action. "We found this" she held up a volleyball proudly.
"To pass the time...if you're interested in a game" Rory shrugged.
Sherlock and john hadn't played volleyball much, but they saw no reason not to go along.

Amelia and Rory decided to find Sam next. After walking for a while, He turned out to be with Jess, who he had apparently been talking with for a while . Amelia felt a slight tug when she saw them together, but decided those complicated feelings were for another time. They seemed quite eager for a group game after the quiet of the forest.
