"you're not alone, Scott,"

The jet's engines hummed faintly in the underground hangar, still waiting for orders. But inside, the mood was heavy.
Scott sat beside Kurt and Jean in silence. The three of them had escaped—barely—but the guilt still burned in Scott's chest.
"It should've been me," he choked out.
Jean gently turned to him. "That's not how he felt."
Scott blinked back tears. "He was going to do something with his life. He was always the one."
"He felt the same about you," Jean said softly. "That you were going to make a difference. Maybe even change the world."
"How would you know that?" he asked, voice cracking.
Jean looked away, the shadows in her eyes deepening. "Because I know how everyone feels."
Scott lowered his head. "I've never felt more alone."
"You're not," Jean said, her voice barely above a whisper. "You have her." She glanced toward Natalie, unconscious on the floor of the jet, curled up like a broken bird, her face pale, her hands still stained with ash.
Scott rested his hand gently over hers. Her wedding ring caught the light.
"She loved him more than anything," he murmured. "The way she looked at him—like he was her sun, her stars, her sky. He was her world." He gave a small, broken smile. "And she was his."
Jean's hand closed over his. "More than you know."
Kurt crossed himself quietly, whispering a prayer. "Hold me in the light of God. Protect me from danger. Save me by your command. Listen to my prayer... and keep me safe."

Natalie woke with a jolt.
A scream echoed in her mind—a memory or a haunting, she couldn't tell.
She sat up slowly, the edges of her vision still blurred. Her throat felt tight, her chest hollow.
Peter, startled by Hank's blue form, stumbled backward. "Okay. That's new. That... doesn't happen to everyone, right?"
"No," Hank muttered. "Just forgot my meds." He stood, brushing himself off.
Natalie hugged her knees to her chest, silent.
"What happened? Where are we?" Moira asked, glancing around.
Natalie barely heard her.
"Hey!" Raven called out as heavy footsteps echoed.
