You stumbled into the Cullen house, exhausted, late, and smelling like wet dog. The latter two were your mistakes.
Emmett loved that you had friends, and had stated many times that he was NOT jealous. He just didn't see why you had to be friends with his natural enemies. Or why you had to hang out with them on the one place in the world he couldn't follow you without starting a war. OR why you couldn't have guy friends that were less attractive and actually wore clothes. But he wasn't jealous. And he didn't sit in silence on the front stoop of the porch, waiting to hear the sound of you coming back to him.
This is how you knew you were in big trouble: Emmett wasn't even on the porch anymore.
Hesitantly you stepped through the door and up the steps.
This is also how you knew he was pissed: he wasn't kissing you as soon as he heard you arrive.
You found him in the living room, playing video games. Jasper was sitting on the other couch, nose in a book. He'd probably been sitting up with Emmett for the past few hours, both as a voice of reason, to tell Emmett that of course if something was wrong they'd have heard about it, and as an empath to keep him calm even when he didn't want to be.
Jasper shot you a warning look when you entered the room. This was also how you knew.
You were in big, big trouble.
"Hello." You said quietly.
Emmett's head turned slightly, but didn't leave the video game, which he'd beaten several times and no longer needed to focus on in order to play it.
"Come back with fleas?" He mumbled.
Your nostrils flared, but you moved around the couch and sat beside him anyway, smirking. "Is that supposed to be a wolf joke? You could do better." No reply. His frown deepened. You tried again. "I'm exhausted."
"I'll bet you are." He said, and tossed the controller to the side to face you. "Are you even gonna try and tell me where you've been? You wanna ask Edward how many times I've contemplated breaking that stupid treaty–or Paul's neck–in the last two hours?"
You took a breath. "You have every right to be mad-"
"Mad?" He interrupted. "I've been frantic. I spent a good half an hour trying to figure out what I'd do if you turned up dead."
You flinched, the words striking you. "Paul's car broke down and my phone was dead. Emmett, you know I'd have called you if I could."
The mention of Paul's name wasn't smart. Emmett's mouth snapped shut and he stood. "Just–don't."
You ground your teeth and stood, walking after him. "Why is this always about Paul?"
He stopped and turned, outraged. "You think I care more about whether you're boinking Paul than whether you're alive?"
"No, baby, that's not what I'm saying." You said, your voice firm but gentle. "But you can't tell me that isn't part of the reason you're upset. You bailed as soon as I said his name."
"That's ... that's completely beside the point, Y/N." He shook his head.
"Will you quit walking away from me?" You demanded, getting heated yourself.
"Not right now, Y/N." He opened the door, stepping outside. You followed.
"I know you get jealous, Em. Quit acting like you don't."
"Go back inside." He growled.
"You wouldn't be this pissed if I'd gotten stuck on the side of the road with Bella." You said.
Emmett whipped around, "HE CAN GIVE YOU THINGS I CAN'T, Y/N." He roared, and you stumbled backward, afraid.
"Emmett?" Rosalie was on the porch, along with the rest of them.
His face smoothed into regret as soon as he realized what he'd done.
"No. No, no, no," Emmett ran a hand through his hair. "I'm sorry, Y/N, please, I'm sorry."
"I'm fine." You stood shakily.
"No you aren't. God, I keep-" Emmett's face buckled in anguish, and he messed up his hair again. "Just please, baby, I'd never hurt you."
"Jasper, take Y/N upstairs." Carlisle said, "I think this conversation will best be handled tomorrow morning, after she's gotten some rest."
"No, I don't-" You sobbed, looking around frantically for Emmett. You were angry at him, and pissed at yourself for getting that scared, and the only person who knew how to cheer you up was the one you were fighting with. And he was gone. "Emmett? Emmett, c'mon, please."
You felt calm wash over you unbidden, and wiped your eyes. "Quit it, Jasper." You snapped.
"Let's go upstairs, he'll be fine." Jasper suggested. He was your closest friend of all the Cullens.
"No." You spat. "Go with him."
Jasper traded looks with Carlisle, who nodded. Jasper disappeared into the forest, Alice led you upstairs. When you reluctantly let exhaustion pull you into a restless sleep, Emmett was still nowhere to be found.
