"I know where my house is from here. It's within walking distance." I looked at the back of Jace's head. His light brown hair looked charred and messy from the fire.
He let out a sigh. "Then what?" he stopped walking and turned around. "Then what are we gonna do?" Realization crossed his face and he looked around the schoolyard before letting me try to answer. "Where is everyone?"
I stopped and looked around for myself. There wasn't a trace of the students or teachers, "I have to idea."
Jace took one last look, and kept walking.
"Where are we going?" I asked. I didn't think he knew this area very well, and if we aren't going to my house then I didn't know where he thought he was going to go.
"Away from here."
I let out a heavy sigh that made my shoulders sag. "Well obviously. Do we have a destination?"
He stopped walking again and looked around in front of him, thinking. "Nope," he decided and continued to walk.
I let out a irritated sigh. "Then why can't we go to my house?"
He stopped in his tracks so suddenly I almost ran into him.
"What?" I snapped and looked around. There was nothing there other than the burning school and empty campus.
"The road," he said staring at it.
I studied the road that was maybe ten yards away. "Um, yeah. That's the road. What's wrong with it?"
"Nothing," he answered, "There are just cars on it."
I must have given him a strange look. "Yup . . . that's what roads are for."
He shot me a look of annoyance. "I'm just glad there are still people here. I would have been pretty creeped out if we were the only sign of people still living." He started walking again.
Another eye roll. "You watch too many movies." I said and walked along with him.
Jace ignored me. "Alright, we'll go to your house. We should probably call 9-1-1 anyway about the school." he said and glanced behind him at the flames dancing around the school.
