It's a normal day at the Renstin Shopping Centre. I lean against the counter out of boredom.
"Hello!" I force a smile. This job sucks, but I don't want to get fired. The woman doesn't respond. I check out her items. "Candles, flowers, and pasta. You having anyone cute over?" She slaps me. "I WASN'T HITTING ON YOU, DAMMIT!" I screech.
"Rowan!" My boss shouts. I roll my eyes.
"She slapped me!" I defend myself.
"The customer is always right." She narrows her eyes.
"I shop here, too. That makes me right." I smirk. If she was in a cartoon, smoke would be pouring out of her ears. She's got the tomato red part covered, though.
"Out." She commands. I grab my coat and backpack and exit the store. I put on my jacket, slinging the backpack over one shoulder. All of a sudden, someone grabs my hand.
"You're male, right?" He asks.
"Uh, yeah. I don't have time for you all making fun of my hair." I roll my eyes. My hair reaches my chin, and is always in a mess. He grabs my hand and yanks me along. "Dude! What the hell!" I turn around only to see a meteor crashing on top of the fountain. I start running with him and we exit the mall, just in time to see a large object falling from the sky. "Is that the moon?" My eyes widen. There's a girl standing near a door.
"Female! We must evacuate immediately!" The man screeches. She shrugs and enters the door. I follow them through and the door closes. The man rushes to the other side of the room, and pushes some buttons. A window appears and I feel a lurch. I look out the window at the impending moon.
"Pinch me. This is a dream." The girl slaps me. This is very real. "Thanks." I wince.
"Magri! Show these two the ropes!" The man calls. A girl with short dirty blonde hair appears.
"Hello, my name is Magri." She tells us.
"Maggie?"
"Magri. But you can call me Maggie if you want." She corrects. "And you are..." she looks at the name tags on our work uniforms. "Rowan and Pele."
"Pele's my last name. It's Jade." The other girl rolls her eyes.
"Sorry, Jadeite." Maggie apologizes.
"Jade isn't short for Jadeite. My name is just Jade." Jade looks like she's about to explode.
"Right. And you are Rowan, right?" She turns to me.
"Rowan Brooks. That's me." I look away.
"Now can someone PLEASE explain what's going on?" Shouts Jade.
"Your planet, Terra, is having a collision with its moon, Luna. This will cause the extinction of your species and all others native to that planet. You are currently the last homo sapiens, or humans, alive. You two are the last of your race." Someone bursts out of a closet, gasping.
"AIR! PURE AIR!" He exclaims.
"You three are the last of your race." Maggie corrects, pursing her lips. "And who may you be, stowaway?"
"Xavier McAllister." He says. Maggie holds out a hand for him to shake reluctantly, which he high-gives without a second of delay.
"Um." She turns to the man. "Regeit, can we throw this one into space?"
"No." He answers. Xavier approaches the window. "Woah. That moon's almost there." He comments. "CRASH!"
"Excuse me?" Maggie stares at him incredulously.
