"It's been two months." I tell Ruby, grinning. Two months since we officially got back together, "I couldn't be any more happier, mon amour!"
Ruby rests her head on my shoulder, her eyes looking up at me as the television continues to play in the living room. Luckily enough, the children weren't here yet. They were still out shopping for their graduation outfits. Oh, yeah, they're graduation in two days! Could you believe it? "Neither could I," She whispers, arranging herself on the couch so she could lean in to peck my lips.
She stretches afterward and decides to get up when she hears her cellphone beep. She steps toward it and slides her finger across the screen, reading whatever notification she just got. A frown takes control on her face. I furrow my eyebrows, "What's wrong?"
She sighs, shaking her head in disbelief. "Eddie just messaged me to tell me that Evangeline had invited him to her graduation." She types something back quickly before she continues, "The coward isn't going to show up and he doesn't have the sufficient balls to tell her himself."
"So," I ask, "You're going to tell her?"
"I have to," She responds. "She'll be waiting for him to show up that day and he never will."
"Why the hell couldn't he attend his daughters graduation?" I scoffed, it didn't make any sense to me. Evangeline is his daughter, it's the least he could do for her after his wicked wife treated her like crap.
I'm pretty sure this was Chloe's idea, to forbid Eddie from showing his face at the ceremony because he'd be near Ruby and Chloe wasn't invited. She's probably just ticked off that her "step-daughter" didn't invite her.
But no one wants Chloe there.
"How're you going to tell her?" I ask, "She's going to be upset." Ruby looks toward the coffee table where the small stack of papers are just sitting.
"I have no idea, yet." She shrugs, "I do know that she'd be just as upset as she was when she called him to tell him that she had gotten accepted into her dream college."
I nod. The bastard couldn't even bother to pay any attention to Evangeline on the phone, he was to busy arguing with Chloe. I sigh.
"I could tell her for you." I offer, Evangeline and I have become a little closer lately. We've created like this father-daughter bond. It's going pretty good, too.
Ruby shakes her head. "I don't know, this is something I have to do. I'm her mother." I nod in understanding. For the rest of the time, we continue to watch some movies until Evangeline and Albert return. When they do, we agree on ordering takeout.
After we all finish eating, Evangeline and Ruby stay in the kitchen to talk about Eddie not attending the ceremony.
Meanwhile, Albert and I decide to go outside to the backyard. Maybe I'm being a little sentimental about my son graduating but in my defense, it's a very important and huge milestone. "Dad," Albert says softly. "I want to know something."
"Yes, you can still live here while your in college. No, I won't charge you for housing." I joke, he cracks a smile but shakes his head.
"I just wanted to know how serious you are with Ruby." Before I could answer him, he speaks again. "Because I don't want you to hurt her, she's a really cool person. I like her." I quickly say something before he could continue.
"That won't be happening, fils." I say with confidence. "I love her, I will marry her, again"
Albert smiles, "Good."
Later that day, I go into Ruby's bedroom and ask her how it went with Evangeline. "She was upset," Ruby sighs. "She told me she wasn't going to let Eddie upset her more than what he already did but I'm pretty sure she's crying in her bedroom right now." She shoves her face into her hands, "I want nothing more than to go into her bedroom and make her feel better but I can't interrupt her privacy. I'm sure she wants to be alone."
I nod, "Just remember that it isn't your fault. Eddie is the one who doesn't want to go to his own daughters ceremony. He's he one who fucked up. Not you." She nods. I take a seat beside her on her bed.
We haven't done anything yet, so don't think something will happen right now. The most we've done is make out. I don't want to push her further until she's ready which is why I'm going at her pace.
She rests her head on my shoulder, "Thank you. I needed that." She admits, "I felt horrible for having to tell her that her father wasn't going to bother to show up."
I nod as I lean in to place a kiss on the top of her head. She smiles up at me and presses another kiss on my lips. We go back and forth until we just don't pull away for quite a while.
I feel her smile between our lips, and our kiss deepens.
And everything that's happened today, somehow vanished during this moment.
In this very moment, there is nothing and nobody else but us.
