I shook hard and speedy, trembling in fear. Who are the Evils? What are they doing here?
I heard another gun shot, louder than before, making me envision life with two ears. I remembered that sound from when I was two; a robber was jogging away from the market down the road, and there were three police men on the ground acting like ragdolls. Well, I thought they were acting.
There was a big ringing sound aiming closer and closer to me. I was so frightenend because I couldn't leap out and view the battlefield. Daniel made me go in here to keep me safe; but truth is, I want him to be safe too.
I hung my head over my left shoulder and swayed it back and forth, boredom filling the air. The closet door whipped open, and I screamed as loud as I could. My vocal chords kept going, but the same smooth hand that touched mine a day ago moved to my mouth and clamped it shut.
"It's just me Penny." he whispered, breathing in my ear.
"I know that now. Don't scare me like that."
"I'm sorry. We need to stay quiet. Take cover behind the shoe rack, I'll stay here and keep watch through the crack of the door."
I squirmed around the tight gap through the two shoe racks. They were clean yet cluttered in shoes and socks colored so vivid that in the pitch black darkness in the room, I could still distinguish them one by one.
A sound echoed throughout the room, starting through the crack and zooming around the air. It sounded different, not a bullet, but like a bomb.
"Where is he!" A groaning voice screeched. I felt so isolated behind this barracade but so safe and sound, so that when I heard the man, I kept calm and still.
"He was here, I tell you!" The man dreaded. The emotion through his voice showed he was dissatisfied that he didn't find his goal.
"Who is-"
Daniel pounced onto my lap and closed my mouth so violently, my teeth crushed together and scraped my tounge.
"Don't say anything Penny, they'll find us."
A knock banged against the bedroom door. The thunder trembled me head to toe. Daniel was still taped onto me, holding my breath. His heart beated against mine, sharing energy to keep me so still.
"Check everywhere, we need to get him. He's got to be here somewhere..."
The noise drifted off, the door bolted shut, and Daniel removed his body off of mine, ready to explain the mess.
"Those are the Evils. They want me."
"Why you?" I started to panic. Am I in the same closet as a criminal?
"Because I have something they want."
"What is it?"
He slipped away, took a long deep breath, and spoke as soft and empathetic as he could.
"You."
