"it's so boring not having work." jihoon muttered, resting his chin on his hand, staring off in the distance. the boys on break currently were at a restaurant, stuffed away in the farthest corner where people wouldn't listen in on their conversation.
jinyoung usually would have replied to his partner, but he looked uneased, his gaze flicking behind them to the doors of the restaurant and back to the boys. shihyun was stuffing his face with pasta, small bits falling out onto his plate. taemin managed to get food all over his hands, and without even trying to clean them, continued to eat his meal like a dog. eunki, forever the thin man, finished after one salad that was served at the start of their meal.
"well, we did break regulations on our first job," eunki snorted, "but if this is happening to us, why are half of those older officers there, i bet samuel is doing all the work."
"remember, not all of them are dicks," shihyun cautioned, "taehyun, if there's a case, would be working with someone to figure it out. donghan's been too busy lately with his studies, but he's fairly nice too. then that duo namhyung and dongsu are still on vacation, if they were here with us they'd be super helpful."
"majority are assholes," jihoon laughed, "sometimes i just feel like punching one of them, but i predict i'd get kicked out if i did that, especially with how moody minhyun's been lately."
eunki leaned back, closing his eyes. "minhyun's been a mess since jaehwan's death. they did have connections before, although not positive, so perhaps he feels guilty for not settling their issues. this might be a stretch, but i think at one point minhyun had feelings for jaehwan, but couldn't express them since jaehwan was with sewoon, and that frustrated him, so he lashed out."
"romance analysis eunki always knows the issue with love," shihyun teased, his plate clean now, "but there was definitely something going on between those two sometime in the past. we really should solve the case, so minhyun can be at peace."
"we should call up the nu'est academy and contact minhyun's friends," jihoon suggested, "they'd probably be able to cheer him up and we could go back to our duties."
"jinyoungie," taemin finally wiped off all the excess food over his face and hands, "are you okay? you'd usually be talking with us."
jinyoung flinched and hunched down, his gaze wary. "can we just go, please?"
---
donghyun insisted on treating the two officers to biscuits, despite the urgent situation. now the three sat at the kitchen table. above them on the second floor there were screams of fury.
"they've been playing games all day," donghyun shook his head, "what do you need to know?"
samuel's mind worked much faster than he could ever speak, and questions whirled in his mind. "well, do you have a recording of the call? if you don't, can we have your phone and get access to the call?"
"i sadly do not have a recording of the phone call," donghyun sounded depressed that he didn't complete an important task, "but yeah, i do have the phone. it's actually youngmin's, i don't have my own. too much money."
donghyun dug in his back pocket of his shorts, then pulled out the phone, which was ridden with nicks and cracks along the sides. he slid it over to the officers, where samuel instantly began tinkering with it.
"what time did your roommate call?" taehyun inquired, figuring that samuel had forgotten to ask the question, which he had.
"about 3am," donghyun told them, "i usually wake up early, around 4:30, since i sleep in early, but last night i just couldn't sleep, which is why i'm sluggish now."
"what can you remember from the call?"
donghyun squinted his eyes. "well, woojin was just talking about how happy he was that he found an old friend, hyeongseop, after years, then continued to talk about how much he wanted to finish school already, then there was this horrible shriek from him and then silence. after that i heard breathing, then the call was ended. i thought the worst and called the police station a little later."
"and you said your other roommate when to go find woojin?" taehyun pressed gently, knowing from experience that harsh interrogations get nowhere.
donghyun's eyes suddenly filled with tears. "woojin always comes home at 11pm, never later, sometimes earlier. i wasn't too worried since woojin's growing up and should be staying out more, but our 16 year old roommate, daehwi, got really panicked for some reason and at about 1am he left to go try and find woojin. daehwi has no phone, so i couldn't contact him after the call to tell him to come home or to even know where he was. i would've gone to look for them, too, but i had to make sure no more of my roommates left."
taehyun smiled softly, reaching over to place his hand over donghyun's. "you did everything you could, don't feel guilty. we'll try our best to find daehwi and woojin, then return them home safely."
---
woojin woke up on a bridge, rested against the small wall that assured people walking along that they wouldn't fall. his head pounded and his leg felt fucked up. groaning, woojin blinked away the sleep up his eyes, looking around.
his heart thumped when he saw a man enveloped in gray standing by the wall of the bridge, daehwi held in his clutches. the man was watching woojin intently, and seemed overjoyed that he had finally awoken.
"ah, woojinie! you're finally up! i know you love love daehwi, so i waited for you!"
"who the hell are you?" woojin rasped, his throat dry. the person laughed, pulling a shining, gorgeously polished gun from his back pocket, placing it against the back of daehwi's head.
"woojinie," the person clucked thir tongue in disapproval, "no cursing, if you do i'll blast daehwi's brains out quicker~ which, i guess doesn't matter because i will anyways!"
daehwi's shoulders suddenly started shaking, but the person in gray didn't notice, too focused on woojin's reaction. suddenly, daehwi shoved away the offender, throwing them to the ground. with panicked eyes, daehwi met woojin's gaze and ran towards him, his legs jelly.
"woojin, jump in the river." daehwi ordered, grabbing the older boy. woojin, with his twisted leg, tried his best, and quickly managed to fling himself over the wall into the flowing river below. the gray person laughed, and daehwi turned back briefly before jumping to see them pulling back the hood of their gray jacket, fluffy auburn hair bursting out.
when daehwi jumped over the edge, following woojin, he thought he saw a friend of his, jinyoung, standing at the edge of the bridge.
