Saturday. A day most kids enjoy. Most. On Saturday's we have to walk around delivering what people bought the night before and spend the rest of the day doing tons of chores.
I wake up in Maddie's arms, her still sleeping. I carefully climb out and go to my bed. I open up the small chest the at foot of my bed, staring at all my clothes piled together. I pick out a white tee and jean shorts, as it will be hot. I place the clothes on my bed for me to change into later and walk back over to her bed. We still have a while before breakfast, so I slip back under her blanket and gently set my arms around her. I don't plan to go back to sleep, I just want to lay here with Maddie.
We lay there for a while, then Maddie turned over to face me. "Good morning," she said to me as I stared into her hazel eyes. "Good morning," I replied as I snuggle closer to her. She whispers into my ear, "Breakfast is soon, I think we should get up." I groan in response, I just wanted to lay here with her, but she got up and walked over to the small wooden chest that she owned containing all her clothes. She held up a white sweater, "Does this look good?" I ignored her and turned over, I didn't want to get up. She walked over to my backside, and pushed me off the bed. I hid the floor with a loud thud. "Ouch.."I quietly said. She walked over and sat in front of me, "I'm sorry, I didn't hurt you, did I?" I sat up and stared into her hazel orbs once again, "Of course not, I'm fine. You don't need to worry," I said, engulfing her in a hug.
Maddie pulled away from our embrace, but her facial expression showed that she didn't want to. I made my way over to my bed and changed into the white tee and jean shorts. I looked at my arm for a moment. There were still scars from when a cut myself a week or so ago. I was so grateful for Maddie, I don't know what would've happened if she wasn't there for me, but I don't know if she would survive without me either. The thing was, we just needed each other, who knows what would happen if we were separated. I tore myself away from my thoughts to face Maddie who was wearing a black and white patterned shirt with black jean shorts. "You look amazing," I said. Her cheeks turned pink in response, "Thanks!"
I took her hand and intertwined our fingers as we made our way to the dining room. We were served cereal for breakfast, as always. We quickly ate and walked into the lounge, other children spread around the room. We took a seat on the couch where a few girls were watching some TV show. I rest my head on Maddie's shoulder as I always do, and we quietly watched TV.
Ms.Ruby walked into the lounge, "Alright everyone, it's Saturday so you know what that means! When I call your name, please come see me so you know where you will be delivering the cookies." She called everyone's name until Maddie and I were the only two left. "Alright girls come here," she told us, and we walked over to her, still holding hands. Ms.Ruby must have noticed this as her eyes started to fill with rage, "What the fuck are you two doing?" she said. "We're just holding hands," I quietly said. "Well stop," she firmly replied, and to avoid any conflict, I let my hand fall to my side. "That's better," she said and handed us a clipboard, "Carly, I'm sure you know what to do, so I'm not going to explain it. Make sure to be back in time for lunch, or you will be punished for being late." I turned to face Maddie, "Basically we just go around and deliver the stuff people ordered yesterday. The clipboard says where we need to go and stuff and what to deliver." Maddie nodded in understanding. I took her hand and walked out the front door.

We got back just in time for lunch, which was very lucky, as we would have probably been beaten if we were late. We take our seats at the table, when Ms.Ruby makes an announcement, "Girls and boys listen up! I am making a new rule that you are to stay seated at the table until everyone has finished eating, as I do not like when I have little idiots running around," she says. A few younger kids have tears slip out of their eyes at the use of the harsh word. I stand up in protest, "Why? That's not fair!" She glares at me. I'm not scared, but I can tell Maddie is. She tugs on my arm and whispers to me, "Please sit down." I shake my head at her. "I don't care if it's fair or not, now sit down before you get it," Ms.Ruby angrily says. I keep standing, but she walks over to me and pushes me into my seat. I stand back up, the kids gasp. She slaps me across my face, leaving a red mark. I try to avoid crying, so I just calmly sit down and start to eat my lunch. Everyone is staring at me. I try to act as boring as possible so they'll lose interest and look away. They eventually go back to eating lunch and I relax a little. It's silent. So silent you could hear a pin drop. Now that everyone has seen what Ms.Ruby can do, they're all scared of her. We all sit around, waiting to be released form the table until Ms.Ruby finally comes back and says we can leave.
Maddie grabs my wrist as soon as I stand up and drags me to our room. She shuts the door and wraps her arms around me, sobbing. "Are you okay? This is all my fault.." I stare into her hazel eyes, "It's not your fault at all, it's that bitch who thinks she can just treat us terribly." She chokes out a sob and I pull her closer as we stand there, enjoying being wrapped up in each others arms. Maddie pulls away for a second and presses a kiss to my cheek, right where Ms.Ruby slapped me, "All better?" she asks. I nod my head and I can feel my cheeks heat up. In return, I place a kiss to Maddie's cheek, and her face goes red. She hides her face by placing her head on my shoulder, but I pull her back up so I can see her. She covers her face and I let out a little giggle, placing my arms around her.
We stay in our room for the rest of the day, having random conversations, until it's time for dinner. We were supposed to be doing chores, but we had already done so many throughout the week, so we decided to take a break. I can tell Maddie is scared due to the events that took place earlier today. We slowly walk to the dining room, hand in hand, and take our usual seats at the table. Not very many kids are talking, they are probably still frightened from when Ms.Ruby showed her true self in front of everyone.
When everyone finishes their dinner, they are still sitting there, scared that they will be hit if they got up, according to what Ms.Ruby said earlier. I hate her so much, how does she even keep her job when she abuses kids? Ms.Ruby finally walks in and dismisses us from the table. Maddie and I lock our arms together and walk towards our room. I quietly shut the door and pull out the jar under my bed. We're not even close to being able to have enough money to run away. We'll just have to suffer, but as long as we try to behave, at least around Ms.Ruby, we'll be fine. At least I hope we are. "How much money is there?" Maddie asks, "Not enough," I reply, "I don't think we're ever going to be able to get enough money to break out of here, but try to stay strong." Maddie nods, "As long as I'm with you everything will be fine," she says, then walks over to hug me.
---
The next week passes by slowly, nothing interesting happening at all. Maddie and I luckily avoid any trouble with Ms.Ruby, and we try to stay on everyone's good side. I don't need any more drama happening in my life. It's Tuesday and everyone is sitting around the table eating dinner, when Ms.Ruby walks in with some boy. "Children listen up," she says, "today we have a new child joining us and his name is Max." The boy gives a shy smile at us and waves. He has brown hair and brown eyes to match. I have to admit, he is very pretty. Ms.Ruby leaves with him, probably showing him to his room.
After we are dismissed from dinner, Maddie and I head to our room. We open the door and see Max sitting on the bed next to mine. We walk over to him, "Hi! I'm Carly and this is Maddie," I say gesturing to Maddie, "I'm going to guess that you are our new roommate?" He nods his head in response. There is an awkward silence for a moment before I speak up, "Well if you need anything don't hesitate to ask us!" I say and he nods. Maddie and I leave the room and go to the lounge, We take a seat on the couch where we usually sit. "He seems shy," I say, "maybe we should give him some space, I mean he's here in an orphanage so let's give him some time to adapt." Maddie agrees, "Yeah, plus something must've happened for him to be here so.." I nod my head, "Yeah, I remember when I first came here, I was so upset." "Same," Maddie says.
Five minutes before it's time to go to bed Maddie and I leave the lounge and head back to our room. Max is sitting on his bed reading a book. I grab some pajamas and head to the bathroom to change, and Maddie changes after me. When we get back in our room we notice that Max hasn't gotten ready for bed yet. "Max," I say, "You should probably go and get ready for bed, Ms.Ruby will come in and tell us to go to sleep in a few minutes." He nods his head, as always, and grabs his pajamas and walks out of the room. Ms.Ruby walks in after Max has left, "Don't give Max a hard time, okay?" "Yes Ms.Ruby," Maddie and I say in unison. She walks out as Max walks back in. He turns out the light before heading to his bed and climbing under the blue blanket.
After a while of not being able to sleep, I tip-toe over to Maddie's bed before slipping under her blanket and into her arms. Max is cute, but I don't think I'll ever like him as much as I like Maddie.
