Chapter 1: New Discoveries

Chloe's POV)

I walked into Elwin High School for our sophomore year with a content look on my face as Syd trailed behind me.

We already had our schedules and dorm rooms. Surprisingly, I was with Syd and our other friend Sara. Although most of our group of friends still live with their parents, (with the exception of Syd, who lives alone in a small apartment) the boarding school we go to required for us to live in the dorm rooms over the school year. We were allowed to go home over the weekends.

"Hey guys!" I hear a familiar voice call out. Syd and I turn around to see Patty, David and Sara waving, well I saw Sara and Patty waving. David was staring at his phone until Sara grabbed his shoulder and pushed down on it. I was pretty sure I heard a crack as Sara grabbed his shoulder. He broke his phone from the shock grip he had on it. Sara let go and calmed herself by discussing something with Syd. I patted David on the back as he winced in pain and mourned over his third broken phone from situations like this. Patty joined me as well. And finally Syd spoke up.

"I see the whole gang's back together, but where's Brady?" We all looked around in realization that Brady was missing.

He ran up to us screaming,

"Hey guys! Sorry I'm late!" He said in between pants.

"Found these so I thought I could stop to give them to you all!" He handed us all a silver bracelet with a small gem embodied in each one. My bracelet had a Amethyst gem in it. Syd's had a black jade gem, Sara's had a pure white diamond. David's had a brownish colored topaz on it. Patty's had ruby, and Brady's had sapphire.

"What are these for?" I finally decided to ask.

"I don't know, I found them at the base of this weird looking hill on the way to school." Brady stated nonchalantly. None of us said it, but we were all thinking it;

'Where the heck did these come from?'

"We're gonna be late for our first class," David stated after we all slipped on our bracelets. We all pulled our schedules out and ran to our first class; Math. We managed somehow to sit all together with me next to David and Him next to Syd. Syd was sitting next to Sara and she was poking at Brady who was sitting next to Patty. Math was boring as usual. David was looking at online comics on his IPad. I never really knew how he always got away with that. I started to doodle in my notebook.

"What on earth, are you drawing?", David asked quietly. Doodles of superheroes that I made up and the powers that they had were all over my notebook page. I had always had a interest in superpowers and always wished as a kid that I would some day have them.

I covered up the page of embarrassing childhood dreams that I had and whispered quietly, "Nothing." And the rest of class went on like normal.

Lunch rolled around pretty quickly after that. I went into the locker I was assigned and grabbed my bagged lunch out of it. Syd tapped my shoulder and as I turned around, there was no one there. She scared me from the direction that I was facing before. I laughed as she made a weird face and went off to the lunch line. I sat down in the cafeteria with the others and we began to talk about some video games we all liked.

As we were talking a heard a loud voice yell out, "Hey, dorks!" I turned around quickly to see Ethan, Chase, and Jenna the quiet bystander next to their most glorious leader, Bella. Syd looked angry, so did David. Sara looked like she was gonna kill them. Patty and Brady look worried, and I had a dumbfounded look on my face, as if I didn't care what they had to say.

"What do ya have in you pathetic lunch loser," Ethan said right in my face.

I calmly gave him my brown paper bag and said roughly, "Here," He tore through my food like a raccoon through trash. David looked like he was about to punch the guy but I held him back, for now. Syd was already standing up and glaring at the guy, ready for a fight, but Sara held her down. He threw the torn up bag and left over food right at my face.

"This is all gross," He said, "have some better taste in food when I come to take your lunch tomorrow." The two boys and Bella laughed and smacked all of my friends heads as they walked away. I noticed the whole time Chase was looking at us strangely, but ignored for the time being. I looked down at my lost lunch idly. Everyone asked how I was.

"I'm fine," I said, "Those things that they say don't affect me," Everyone understood and nodded as we ate silently.

Finally Brady spoke up, "It's only the first day of school guys, we shouldn't let them do that to us."

Syd growled, like she always does when she is angry, "Still, we do know Ethan from the last prison we were in." Prison, I thought. Syd has always referred to our special schools as prisons or hell pits. Syd had been blind in one eye, ever since she tripped and fell into that branch a few Halloweens back. Ethan knows all about us; How people thought we needed special help. We didn't. I was all a frame. We were at the top of our classes and no one cared. And they both knew, which gave his friends the upper hand. Everyone just thought we needed help. 'Help' I thought to myself. "Help isn't what we need, what we need is freedom" I sighed and we all got up and walked to our next class.

[Timeskip to when they're walking home at 2:30 ]

We all walked over to the park and sat down and talked instead of going home. Our parents would kill us for staying out late, but it's what we did. Syd grumbled as she always does. We all look over to what she was growling at and we saw... Chase? The figure we saw looked like Chase, with his brunette hair and sports jacket. But something about him seemed.. off. His hair was more messed up that usual and his eyes were a glowing green from what we saw.

David spoke, "The hell is wrong with him now?" I snickered knowing that the brunette haired jock had always acted strange from the start.

Sara punched my arm, "Stupid, something might actually be wrong here." I stopped snickering and nodded. Patty motioned for David and I to look and see what's up. We walked over and saw him rolling around on the floor laughing awkwardly. David cautiously poked at him and Chase rose up with a green light. The other rushed towards us quickly Chase's voice changed immediately to a dark, corrupted voice and we all just stared in concern.

"May thy soul be replenished with darkness and sorrow," the dark voice said. Chase's body shot a green blast right at me. I just put my hands up, blocking my face and hoped for the best.
