The greatest tragedies always happen in libraries. For me, the best and worst things to ever happen to me, occurred in a library. And no, I'm not talking about books, though books have broken my heart almost as badly.
I'm talking about a boy.
It always starts with a boy.
**********************************************************************************************
I traipsed down yet another aisle of books, looking for a new thriller to add to my already overflowing handful of novels. The large oak shelves contained volume after volume of multicolored spines I had already read earlier in the fall.
"Something new," I murmured to myself, scanning every title I passed.
Up ahead, I spotted a brilliant red colored book entitled, 'Fatal Fascinations'. Heaving a sigh, I set my large pile down on the ground and stretched my small and nimble arms, attempting to reach the thick text.
"Of course it had to be on the highest freaking shelf," I mumbled, standing on the edge of the bottom one and grasping the red spine of 'Fatal Fascinations.'
Suddenly, as if the book had a mind of its own, it flew off the shelf directly into my face. I stumbled backward. I looked incredulously at the bookshelf. Another book on the lower shelf came flying off. Then another. Then another. Then another.
Five books launched themselves at me in the matter of four seconds. I promptly dodged every one, swatting at them like flies. From the other side of the bookcase I glimpsed a flash of tasseled black hair.
"Listen asshole," I hissed, walking closer to the shelf. "Leave me alone. Go bother someone else."
Striking blue eyes appeared on the other side of the shelf. Whoever it was, he was young. His eyes were bright and alive, their color a shocking vibrant blue.
"You look good," a low voice told me.
I recoiled in disgust.
"And you don't" I told him snarkily. I had come here to find more books to read, not to be hit on by some boy using kindergarten-level techniques.
A low chuckle rumbled from the other side. Two seconds later, the boy rounded the edge of the shelf and stood before me, leaning against the bookcase.
The first thing I did was assess him as I did my book characters. Messy black hair, pale unblemished skin, luminescent blue eyes, dark gray t-shirt, leather jacket, cocky stance. Classic badboy act.
My mouth quirked up in a wry smile. In ten seconds, I had this one pinned. Not interested. But I did have to mentally take back my comment on his appearance. The boy was perfect in every way, as they usually are. His body drew my attention first, his full lips next. Badboy was tall, over a foot above me, and his wide shoulders had me first believing he was a football jock. His leather jacket did nothing to hide the muscles beneath. I bet if I lifted up his shirt, there would be a six pack of abs waiting to greet me.
Yup, the boy was a god.
So I walked away.
Quickly, I bent to pick up my stack of books, adding 'Fatal Fascinations' to the top. I didn't say a word, just turned to walk further down the aisle.
Boys like him don't end up with girls like me. It wasn't the natural order of things. He was danger and darkness, and I was as close to purity and light as you could get.
Instead of giving up, Badboy trailed me, his steps leisurely and slow, as if he were assessing me from behind.
"Leave me alone," I told him again. I attempted to sound as bored as possible.
I just wanted to read my books. I was here to fall in love with fictional characters. Not boys who smash and dash.
"Princess, I don't know where you think you're going," he told me.
"Away from you," I responded casually. I turned to look at him again, in all his sexiness. I inwardly sighed. The things I would do...
"Why?" He questioned, his mouth curving into a smirk.
"Boys like you, don't end up with girls like me." I shrugged and walked farther down the aisle, leaving Badboy stunned at my words.
It was the truth. I wasn't trying to be rude. But I looked at him, all hot and rebellious, and then I thought of me. Long and dull blonde hair that reached the bottom of my back, stormy gray eyes, freckles which mix together with splotches of acne, and no figure.
Badboy isn't interested in me. He's bored, as most of them usually are.
"We could end up together. One night, princess?"
I glanced back at him again, memorizing his handsome face. I want to paint this.
"If you came to a library to pick up girls, you aren't going to have much luck. It's stupid."
"Or it's genius," he cocked an eyebrow, giving me a once over.
I squirmed in the jeans and sweatshirt I was wearing. His attention enflamed me. A small part of me was drawn to him. His eyes called to me in a way that wasn't natural.
"Actually," he informed me, "I came here to hide. But I could use a distraction. What's your name?"
"Not interested," I retorted.
"Okay, Not Interested, I'm Luca."
I scoffed at him. Waltzing back up the aisle so that I was directly in front of him, I decided to get this conversation over with. He looked down on me, his blue eyes alive with fire and amusement.
I pinned him with a look of death, ready to deliver my final blow.
But three screams erupted from the other side of the library. The sound of flesh and bone being torn apart echoed through the small building. I sucked in a sharp breath. Badboy's eyes widened slightly and he cursed under his breath.
"Looks like they found me."
And then the lights went out.
