A Cop's Duty

Chaper 3

Hello James. This is your old friend Semaj.  If you ever want to see your son alive come to the same alley in which you found Jack. If you  don't come in 24 hours we will kill your sons, both of them. We will find Jack if you don't come. While we're at it might as well finish off yourwife too. Maybe if you behave well, we'll tell you about your past. Your 24 hours starts now. Go.

I dropped the note on the floor.

"Daddy what's wrong?" Jack asked nervously.

"You need to tell me everything that happened on our way to the alley," I replied, my voice shaking.

We walked out to the car as Jack thought about where to start.

"Well let's see. It started on the way to school. I missed the bus so I had to walk, but I got lost. I came near an alley when some guy jumped on me. He had a knife and was threatening to stab me if I didn't behave. He started talking about Jimmy like he knew him. He told me that his friends were capturing Jimmy as we spoke.

“I couldn't escape and help. Then he started talking about you. All he said was that you were in for the surprise of your life. Then, he put me in a box when he heard you coming. He tapped on it to get my attention and told me to be quiet. Finally, you saved me. That’s it."

I needed more information. I knew I would need to talk to Jane. We were two blocks away from the alley when I pulled over to call her. Surprisingly, the people at the hospital let me talk to her. Doctors are normally like "No! The patient needs rest. No visitors or phone calls."

"Jane, how are you feeling honey?"

"I’m better than before. The doctors said I'm going to be fine. The injury would’ve been worse if you hadn’t gotten there at that time.”

I sighed with relief. At least she was ok. I don’t know what I would’ve done if I had lost her.

"Honey, I need you to tell me everything that happened."

"Okay, but you're not going to like it," she replied.
