"Fuck you! "

"Eat shit"

"Get out, get fucking out"

I slid my headphone on and drowned out the noise of the neighbours, Friday nights always brought out the crazy, end of the week, pay day, alcohol, whichever they could get their hands on to escape the reality of their world.

I reshuffled myself on the sofa and continued reading my book trying to memorize the words, school hadn't even started but I was eager to fit in, going to college was different than high school, high school you had no options, college was something I wanted, I yearned to learn and leave, like most people I didn't like where I lived, the neighbourhood was rough, rarely safe but I wanted more, I wanted to be more, more than a statistic in a rundown city.

I closed my eyes and whispered the words I had just read, I repeated them for a few minutes, my eyes flicked open and I pushed my book away frustrated, the words wouldn't stick in my head, my headphones pulled from my ears, the screaming outside had stopped.

I stood up and crossed the small area into the kitchen, opening the fridge the light flicked weekly, I scanned the contents and closed the fridge over, the kitchen was dark except the street light that poured in from the window, I peered out to look at the trailer park.

I didn't dislike where I lived, I was almost proud, at nineteen I lived on my own, I had only been here a few weeks but it wasn't too bad, people kept mostly too themselves, even if it was in a trailer, I wouldn't always be here.

"Kim just for a few hours, I swear I won't take too long, Jimmy just wants to talk and work things out, for Laney" The voice was hushed, I could make out two blondes standing at the doorway, one holding a small child wrapped in blankets.

"Dawn" The other woman signed. There was sound of a rustle and I strained my eyes against the dark night

"Thanks Marshal "I could make out another person, he took the child from the woman and disappeared back into the trailer "I swear a few hours" She handed over a changing bag and then turned on her heel and left quickly.

The night fell silent again, I glanced at my uniform ready for work in the morning, I crossed the small space and double checked the door was double locked before I went to bed, as I was drifting off to sleep I could hear the streets of Detroit become alive once more.

--

My alarm went off and I sighed. I hated 6am, nothing was good at this time of the day, I could hear trailer doors slam close, people returning home from being out most of the night. I pushed the blanket away and rolled out of bed before I convinced myself to go back to sleep, I washed and dressed in a haze, glancing at the mirror once, not really interested how I looked. My brown hair was tied up in a messy bun, my plain black trousers, my light blue uniform top, I worked at a local fast food place a few mornings of the week, I had another job at a club serving drinks most nights of the week. My brown eyes glanced over my face, pale, I always looked pale, I sucked in a deep breath, grabbed my bag and left the trailer.

"Morning "A whisper came as I locked the door and turned. Marshall from the trailer a short distance away from mine, I nodded my head and started the walk to the bus stop just along the road from the trailer park. On the way, I seen a few other neighbours, Mr. Lowe who didn't appear to ever go inside his trailer, was sitting outside his trailer, he had a cup of coffee in one hand but his head was tilted, he was snoring lightly, he was decent enough, on our first meeting his words to me were "get you what you need no questions asked, baby girl". I also seen Lisa and Jack who I heard screaming at one another most of the night, they had passed out a few steps away from their trailer, arms wrapped around one another in a loving embrace.
