Starting clinical placement was terrifying, I'd slept less than my usual few hours, my nerves never left me, I drank more coffee than I ever had, everyone had been nice, well mostly everyone but I had expected not to get along with everyone, I kept my head down and stuck close to my mentor. My mentor was an older nurse called Craig, he was around forty and had been nursing ten years.

I was in the unit for elderly patients. It wasn't what I had expected, it was long days and sleepless nights, I had managed to keep work at the club going, I had only had to drop a shift now and again, I had spoken to Conor and he had been really understanding. I only had to work three days a week at the hospital, it wasn't paid work it was counted as part of my degree, the staff had been mostly nice, a few nurses weren't that welcoming but I had expected that.

I grabbed my bag and jacket from the locker room, today had been a long day, I'd been at clinical placement for four weeks, I had another few weeks to go until I'd complete my first placement and then it would be back to sitting in lecture halls and classes for a while.

I said goodnight to a few of the staff on my way out of the unit, I wasn't due back to placement for a few days, I had a few shifts at the club booked, which meant I could be lazy and try and sleep late, I'd most likely end up with a cup of coffee and a book on the sofa.

I hadn't seen Marshall in six weeks, he had gone to promote his album and get it played on the radio and get some record labels to listen to it, Lisa told me Proof had called her a few days ago and they were in Atlanta, he didn't know when they'd be home, he hoped in a week or two.

"Kate!"

I stopped and frowned as I looked around for someone calling my name, but I couldn't see anyone, I started walking again when I heard the sound of running footsteps.

"Kate!"

My heart leapt into my mouth and I couldn't help but smile and sink to the floor as Lainey came running towards me, I opened my arms and she ran right into them, she had grown so much, I hadn't seen her in months.

I wrapped my arms around her and I could feel the tears sting my eyes, her little arms squeezed my neck "I've missed you" I told her, she unwrapped her arms from me.

"Look" Lainey took a seat on the floor and untied her shoe lace, she frowned as she took her laces and started to wrap them around one another, it didn't amount to anything and she sighed, she straightened them out and tried again.

I took a seat on the floor with her and watched as she tried to tie her laces "Who are you here with? "I asked after a few minutes, I looked around but I didn't see Kim or Dawn.

"Mommy" Lainey said, she was still concentrating on her shoes.

"Let's go find her" I said, Lainey sighed and let me tie her shoe lace for her, I stood up and picked Lainey up and rested her on my hip as I took off in the direction Lainey had come from, the corridor led me to the emergency room.

I entered the emergency room waiting area and looked around but Dawn wasn't here.

"Oh gosh there you are" I turned to see a nurse coming towards us, her eyes on Lainey "I turned around and she was gone" The nurse looked relieved to see Lainey. "Do you know her? "The nurse asked as she stopped in front of us.

"Yeah, I'm a friend of the family" It was the best thing I could think of to say, "Is Dawn ok?" I asked.

"I can't really say if you aren't family" I couldn't help but roll my eyes "Dawn is uh" the nurse paused to look at Lainey and then back to me "Sleeping, right now"
