now for the bonus chapter... yay!
"Aww, shit!" Pastor moaned as he sat on his bed, trying frantically to create the device essential for communication with Earth.
"You are wasting your time." Mary suggested.
" I bet it's just some minor problem. Let's see..."
Mary sighed. Where was this immense sense of optimism coming from? Still, she tried one last reasoning to convince the boy.
"How do you know Earth would still be sending signals this late?"
"I don't."
"And the reason you're still working on it IS?"
"Found it! Look! This goes here and... Done! Aha! There you go! I told you it was some minor problem!"
It took Mary some time to realize that she was talking to none other than the ' Universal Genius'.
" AND... done!" Pastor announced, leaving her stunned.
He had really done something great. Something impossible. Assuming what parts to use and making a device whose technology was used by a primitive alien species on a planet that is far far away from one's home is not what every child prodigy is capable of.
Pastor took out a cuboidal device from a drawer on one side of his bed and pulled a small switch on it's one side - the holographic video recorder(HVR) was now on and recording. The device was made to catch memorable times in a small cuboid. Easy to record, easy to play, could not be deleted and easy to carry.
" Behold," Pastor began, "the latest creation of Pastor Regretto!" he glanced at the time teller, then back at the HVR, " on this 19th day of Sravana, year 9166, time 23: 44 am, I hereby announce the invention of intergalactic photon beam receiver-cum-transmitter-cum-reader!"
"I have a bad feeling about this," Mary said, sensing the dangers that lay ahead, as Pastor closed the HVR and put in in his pocket.
" Lets call that InPhoBReTraR." He said, ignoring Mary's warning.
"Where do you get such weird names?"
"Right here" Pastor pointed to his head.
The InPhoBReTraR, named so a while ago, was a device that resembled a laptop, in size as well as in appearance. Deciding to give it a body, pastor had chose the color blue, hence the InPhoBReTraR appearing as a cyan blue laptop.
" Does this thing even work?"
" It sure does" Pastor said with triumph.
" I don't thin-"
She was interrupted by a beeping sound coming from the InPhoBReTraR.
"It's receiving!" announced Pastor as Mary fell silent to see the marvelous sight.
The screen of the device flickered. After punching in a few commands, it went stable to reveal two men in white coats seated on a chair and a man in casuals standing behind, hands crossed, frowning. The men in coats stared blankly at Pastor for a moment, then they turned as if calling someone. Pastor saw their lips move, but could not hear them. Why?
Simple. A thing he learnt in 4th grade. Sound didn't travel in vacuum. Light did. And one sure thing was that humans were using space time warp (earth model) to transfer light, or else it would've taken eras to reach Szezkaban. He wished he could use Szezkaban model. That would've been much faster. But he did not have access to tap into space time warp system yet.
A man soon came into view on the screen. He wore a white cap that probably suggested a higher rank. He had black eyes, a beard and brown mustache.
Pastor took out a data pad sheet, and set into narration mode. "Hello!" the words printed.
He could bet that the humans were surprised, cause all of them had their jaws hanging to their neck by now.
"Hi! What is your name?" One of them wrote with some small stick like thing after consulting with the others, and held it up to the screen so that Pastor could read it.
" I am pastor Regretto." he spoke as the same printed on the sheet. "you still write on cellulose sheets?"
" Yes, what is the ting that you are using to write?"
There was incredible cheerfulness all the time on face of the three men. Looking at them, Pastor was sure he had contacted the 'few good humans' of Earth.
"This is called a Data pad - a voice sensing device that is capable of writing whatever it senses."
He noticed movement behind the humans, only to find that the man in casuals had changed his pose and was now standing with hands in pocket of his jeans. He wore a black half sleeve T-shirt and blue jeans. Just looking at him sent chills running down Pastor's spine. He was surely recognized by Pastor as one of the many 'bad humans'.
Still, ignoring him, Pastor asked, " What are you writing with?"
The three seemed to be shocked at the question presented before them. As if it was a miracle that an alien didn't know about it. One of the men started writing as the other two guided him.
"It's a Pen - a simple device that works on the principle of friction. The particles of ink-"
Before Pastor could read any more, the thing stuck him for the first time. The similarity! How come Earth and Szezkaban both had such similarity of language? Shocking! Amazing! Awesome!
And from that he thought about what he was doing. Whether it was safe and correct or not. This was not some normal conversation he was having. It was an interplanetary one. It was almost like a dream.
It took him some time to overcome the shock, and when he glanced up to the screen again, the message had changed. Disappointed that he could not learn how the 'Pen' device, he read the message that now showed.
" What is that bump on your head?"
" Oh, this, it's... er, a sign of... what was the word... Puberty! This is a sign of puberty in the males of our species. I'm just 14, So I've just got it a few months ago."
The man who was assigned the task to write wrote something, but before he could hold it up, the screen shut off abruptly.
"WHAT?" Pastor yelled.
So loud had it been that Pecoris and Pano both were pulled out of their sweet dreams.
"Look, I told you, he won't be able to make it" Pecoris comforted his wife.
"Hmm"
"And now he's frustrated"
"Hmm..."
"And now he'll -"
" Alright I got it you were right now let me sleep!!!" Pano blew up.
Pecoris took a glance at his wife, only to be rewarded with a pillow straight on his face.
"Ah, that's what you get for telling your wife the-"
"Hmm!"
"Alright," he rolled his eyes. "Damn, you sound even cuter when angry" he mumbled, lying back down on the bed. This comment was rewarded by a smile from Pano, which went unnoticed by Pecoris.
"CONNECTION.. DISABLED" a computerized voice spoke as the same showed on the screen of the InPhoBReTraR.
" Guess they didn't want to talk to a 14 year old." Mary's voice echoed in the room as pastor stared at the device's screen, depressed.
"Oh, gosh!" Pastor wailed, putting back the device into the same drawer he had taken the HVR from.
"Guess I better sleep now" His eyes drooping, he lay on his bed, As mary switched off the lights via voice command, not realizing what blunder they had committed...
