Her red manicured talons slapped the paper on my desk. She looked at me from under glasses smirking with satisfaction. I stared at the glaring red D on my paper. I wasn't surprised. I had totally expected it. Firstly having Mrs. Eves as an English teacher was bad enough, but I just had this talent of being bad at a language I spoke every single day. I personally believed words had no power. They were just combinations of different letters. Who decided to give them so much power over us?

I walked through the dull hallways blending in with the others, having small conversations with people here and there. I stuffed my English paper in my locker bracing myself for my mother's wraith. I felt bad too. She worked day and night to pay my high school fees. I took a deep breath and turned around for my next class.

"I'm home!" I exclaimed to nobody and placed my bag down. I slumped down on my study table and held my head in my hands. Mom was out working night shift at the hospital again so I was by myself for a few hours. Recently she had started taking up any opportunity she could for an extra shift here and there. Maybe it was because of our financial struggles or maybe she had find some way to escape. I'll never know I guess.

I sat alone with my thoughts for a while before deciding to head to the kitchen and make some dinner. Lights flashing through the window caught my eye and I peeked through the blind. There was a big movers truck at house diagonally across us and a woman was carrying some boxes into the house. New neighbours. I made a mental note to tell mom and closed the blind and focused on making some grilled cheese.
