I locked the door behind me and headed out for school. I passed by our new neighbours house and casted a quick glance at its inhabitants who were standing outside the main door. There was a middle aged woman talking to a dark haired boy who seemed about my age sixteen, seventeen maybe. He was wearing black shades with a gold outline. He seemed bored by his mother's chatter and was looking towards the ground. Another spoiled boy I mentally rolled my eyes.
I entered the crowded hallways and groaned. Ugh why are there so many people. I pushed my way through to class and sat in my seat waiting for time to pass so I could get out of this place.
Today in biology we learnt about the eye. How they detect light and the image falls on the retina therefore we are able to see. The way this image travels to our brain and it processes it. Truly amazing I thought. All of this happens in less than a fraction of a second. I shut my textbook for my last lesson and hurried out dreading the walk home in the heat.
As my house came into view I saw the same boy from the morning sitting on the stairs outside his house staring at his hands and a Labrador lay quietly beside him. His brown hair shining like liquid gold in the sunlight. I contemplated saying hi or something but decided not to as I passed by my feet thumping on the pavement he looked up, his eyes covered with the same dark shades, but if he noticed me he didn't show it. Beside him the dog stirred and I quickly walked away without risking being attacked.
That whole evening I thought about him. I exchanged no words with him but there was something. Something that bothered me but fascinated me. You saw him for a second I smacked my cheeks trying to get rid of my distracting thoughts. But I couldn't help but wonder what his eyes looked like under those shades.
