My sixteenth birthday
I've been grounded for months
for opinions that just seem to
make sense to me
I disagree
with this man that I am supposed to call my leader
This man who has cultivated hate and the rest of the country says
stay quiet about it.
You don't know oppression.

My seventeenth birthday
I don't feel safe
going anywhere at night
without the protection of steel and gasoline
and locks that are rusting
I am once again an object.
Now more than ever.
I am no more than a "her"

My eighteenth birthday
I finally decide that it is time
to get a job with a living wage
except my male coworkers make a dollar
for every 75 cents that I make.
August 26th, 2020
my nineteenth birthday
At my job, I meet someone
we fall in love we decide to get married
but we can't.
We don't have that right anymore.
August 26th, 2021
My twentieth birthday
If anyone still cares
they won't be demanding four more years.
