There are two forms of media,
Where LGBTQ people get representation.
Poetry, and musical theatre.I once showed a friend of mine
The world of slam poetry,
To which she responded
"Why are they all gay?"And I said to her that it was because
I didn't want her to see the third way that people like me are represented.I was seven the first time I had heard the word "gay"
My mother had sat me down to tell me
To always be kind to people who were different,
Because I could be the last kind person they meet. She told me about a man named Matthew Shepard,
And when I was twelve I told her that I was not straight.I swear sometimes she still gets worried
That the last hand I will ever hold
Won't be a hand at all
But a cold chain link fence covered in my own blood. No mother should have to worry
That their child's identity could be the knife to thier throat, so I will show everyone poetry, and Steven Sondheim lyricsBecause I don't want to watch everyone be afraid.
So when my friends ask
"Why are they all gay?"
I will respond,
Because this is the only place where they can do so safely.
