"Hey, Jes! I'm sorry I'm late," I enter through the back door of the flower shop and call to my coworker as I find my apron. "Jes?" I say when I don't get answer. I start to walk to the front of the shop when I hear their voices. I can't make out what they're saying but I can tell she's talking to a man. I scoot a bit forward, pressing myself to the wall so they don't see me in the doorway.Jes laughs at a joke I didn't hear. "Well, I'm sorry I missed him," the man says, I recognize his voice and after a second I recognize his scent too. He's the wolf from last night, the one who stopped by James' car.
"Yes, I'll let him know you stopped by," I can hear the smile in Jes' voice.
"No need, I'll get a hold of him somehow..." He says ominously and I involuntarily shiver. "Nice meeting you, Jessica."
"Jes is fine," she says flirtatiously.
"Ciao then, Jes," he says and I hear him leave.
I walk out around the corner. Jes his leaning on the counter looking at the door, looking thoroughly charmed.
"Who was that?" I ask her and she barely glances at me.
"A friend of James'," she says dreamily. Now I know for a fact I'm the only werewolf friend James has, so this isn't true.
"He was looking for James?" I presses and she finally looks at me.
"Yes. Not that it should matter to you," she says sourly, "James told me what you did last night." She shakes her head at me, "I'd have stayed home sick if I were him too."
I stare at the ground, guilt eating away at my insides. There had been more than one occasion when I had wished James was my mate so I wouldn't have to be so worried about the day he did come. Now that day had arrived and it was just as bad as I thought it would be.
"Go restock the roses," Jes interrupts my thoughts, "I can't even look at you right now."
I drive my car back to my apartment that night, before the sun is even down. When I unlock the door I am met with Tanner, standing in my kitchen, clad in only his boxers.
"You're home!" He say perking up and like a puppy left home alone all day he runs over to me and showers me with kisses.
"Woah, down boy," I laugh, leaning away from the surplus of affection.
"Sorry," he smiles and I have a hard time believing he is. "I've missed you."
"I can tell," I laugh a little. "You should get dressed, we're going out."
"Oooo," he coos, "on a date?"
"No, to meet the pack. It's a new moon tonight and we like to have full pack meetings at the beginnings and ends of every cycle. So this is the perfect opportunity to introduce you to everyone," I explain. He nods understanding, it's pretty standard routine with most packs. "We'll induct you as a proper member on the next full moon."
"Oh," he sighs, "that's boring."
"It won't be, I promise," I smile a little, exited by the idea of introducing my mate to my pack. I hope they like him. I know they'll like him.
The setting sun was dying the sky with shades of pink and orange as Tanner and I headed into the woods to meet with the rest of the pack.
"So have you thought out your coming out speech yet?" He asks as we walk.
"What are you talking about?" I look at him confused, "my pack already knows I'm gay."
"I mean you're coming out as a bottom. How do you think it will go?" He says, struggling to keep a straight face.
