Tanner and I return to the living room and we sit on the love seat together. Tanner tries to put his hand on my leg but I push it off, we don't have to make this any more awkward than it already is. "Whenever you're ready, James, ask away," I give him a smile and he gives a small smile back.
"Um, so did you two really meet online?" James asks and Tanner bursts out laughing.
"That's what you told him?" He manages, still laughing, "that we were a Grinder hookup?"
"I didn't know how better to explain it! It wouldn't make sense if I told him I'd met you that day!" I say defensively. Turing to James I answer the question, "no, we didn't meet online that was a lie."
James nods, a little embarrassed by Tanner's outburst. "Umm... When you say you can't choose a mate... what exactly does that mean?"
"When we first met, it was kind of a feeling we got..." I struggle to find the right words to describe it, looking over to Tanner. "It's just a draw that pulls you together... you can't fight it, you don't even want to, and nothing else seems to matter as much..." I look into Tanner's shiny blue eyes and he looks into my hazel ones, his fingers tug at mine, intertwining.
James clears his throat and my eyes return to him, but Tanner is still watching me. "So how long have you been a... you know," he doesn't want to say the word, that's kind of cute.
"I've been a werewolf my whole life. I was born to my alpha father and luna mother. I left home at 17 with Ben to start a pack together," I smile politely, this is starting to fell weirder than I thought it would...
"What are all of werewolves powers?" James asks, leaning forward on his knees. Tanner laughs again but we pretty much ignore him this time.
"Um, turning into a wolf isn't enough?" I ask and then laugh, "no there are more. Slightly enhanced scenses, more so as a wolf though. Packs can communicate through our minds, in and out of wolf form. Oh and we're stronger than normal humans, much stronger."
"Yeah I noticed that when you picked me up straight off the ground and ran with me over your shoulder!" James replies exasperated but smiling.
I chuckle, scratching the back of my head. Just them my phone buzzes to life, ringing loudly from my pocket. I pull it out. The caller ID reads Abby and the contact photo of her and her girlfriend mid-laugh fills the screen.
"Hello?" I answer, holding the receiver to my ear.
"CADE I'M SERIOUSLY STARTING TO FREAK OUT CRYSTAL TOLD ME NOT TO CALL YOU BUT I COULDN'T HELP IT!" Abby's voice comes ringing through the receiver, like she's trying to make me deaf.
"Abby, relax, what's wrong?" I say calmly, glancing at the two other boys who both are watching apprehensively.
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN 'WHAT'S GOING ON?'" She bellows, "James is missing!" Oh right, I'd forgotten she was still looking for him.
"It's okay, he's with me," I reply calmly.
"WHAT?!" She doesn't sound as calm. "PUT HIM ON THE PHONE!" She demanded and I obliged, handing my phone to James and telling him Abby wanted to talk to him. "What are you doing right now?" I hear her demand at him from the other couch.
"I - um, I'm at Cade's house..." James answers looking around at me and Tanner for a better elxplaination.
"Yeah, I guessed that," I hear Abby's sardonic reply. "Why are you there?"
James leans the receiver away from his mouth as he whispers to me, "what do I do? I can't tell her I was kidnapped!"
"KIDNAPPED!?!" Abby's voice comes screeching through the speaker making James flinch.
