I call for Ben and tell him to howl the retreat. A few moments later I hear his howl echo through the forest. Eric's, Sarah's and Danny's follow it and I know my pack is on full retreat.
Even so I can hear at least two pack wolves on our tail. I want to give James to Tanner and head them off. Tanner wants me and James to go on while he fights the enemy wolves.
"Fat chance," I say aloud, still keeping stride with my mate in wolf form. "James, have you ever ridden one of those bull riding games?" I ask him, barely panting as I run.
"Um yeah I think once," James says awkwardly not understanding where going with this.
Tanner is going to hate me for this.
"I want you to hold on tight, ok?" I ask him and all at once he understands.
"You want me to ride this giant wolf!?" His voice cracks and I can hear our chasers gaining on us.
"Yes, that giant wolf is Tanner, my mate" I reply. "Do you think you can do it?"
I feel him nod against my back and in a quick, smooth motion I spin him around and plant him on my mates back. They speed off a head of me. Not before Tanner promises his revenge on me.
I turn to face the oncoming wolves. Taking a running start I rip through my pants and sweatshirt, growing fur and claws. The two come into view and I launch myself at the closest competitor. I land two clawed paws on his flank, knocking him to the ground.
His companion makes to bite my back leg but I dodge, catching the fur of his neck in my teeth. The first wolf has recovered and gets to his feet. The two pace around me, trying to find an opening but I keep my eyes on both of them. For a moment we're in a stand off until one of them lunges. I dodge easily but the other is able to land his teeth on my left, front leg.
I bring my teeth down on the scruff of his neck, locking my jaw and shaking his head till he releases me. His friend is on his feet and crouches for the attack. He springs for me and I side step, landing a heavy paw on the side of his head. I'm much bigger than these omega's and I'd almost pity them of they weren't trying to kill me.
I pounce on the second, landing on him and racking my claws down either flank. He howls in pain as blood taints his brown fur. He kicks his back legs at me, freeing himself and scampering into the woods. Without his buddy the other wolf backs off as well, high tailing it back to their camp.
I start to follow where Tanner and James went when a pain shoots through my paw. I look down to see I'm bleeding. I hadn't noticed how bad it was before, adrenalin maybe. I lick it free of blood, addressing the wound. It'll be fine I'm sure.
I continue limping through the forest after my mate and ex boyfriend.
"Cade, oh my God are you hurt?" Sarah rushes towards me as I enter a clearing where my pack (and James) have gathered.
"I'm fine," I bark but she comes over anyway. Most of the pack have found themselves something to wear, the exceptions being Eric and Danny, who are still in wolf form, and Tanner who is standing stark naked next to a very uncomfortable looking James.
Sarah pours over my injury and I pull away annoyed. "Seriously, I'm fine. Is everyone else ok?"
"Yeah, more or less. A few scrapes and bruises, and Joanna got a nasty bite on her leg, but everyone survived!" Damien gives the full report.
I nod and look over to James. He still looks a little shell shocked. I step away from Sarah and shift. She blushes profusely and covers her eyes, Ben tosses me a pair of boxers and I pull them on, one handed.
