Augustus and I are in his living room explaining to our parents how Peter Van Houten was a dick. We kept laughing at our impersonations.
Then suddenly I go black. I see my eyelids close. I start remembering when I was a child. When my father bought the swing set. When I was able to get on it. I remember when I was able to run with children from my class. I remember meeting Augustus. The happiest moment of my life. And everything goes black.Augustus runs to grab Hazel as she falls but his damn leg makes it hard for him to reach her. He wishes he never had cancer so he could run to her and save her before her fragile body hits the floor. She falls on the floor and Augustus throws himself at her. You see his worried face looking for life making sure she didn't die on him.
"Hazel! HAZEL!" He yells.
His mom runs to the phone and calls the ambulance at the same time his father grabs his phone frantically calling Hazel's mother.
The ambulance beats Hazel's mom and Augustus is still there holding her. His face is filled with tears and he just keeps repeating "Hazel". The police men get her away from him and lay her on a bed. Augustus just watches them as he holds her hand. They check her oxygen tank to see if she ran out of oxygen. She's starting to turn blue and lifeless but they confirm that she is alive. Hazel's mother barges in crying and runs to her daughter. She grabs her hand and holds her head with the other. Her face is turning red like everyone else's and her face is drenching tears."We need to take her to the emergency room right now." One of the policemen said .
Augustus asks if he can go and they allow him too. Hazel's mom follows the rushing ambulance with her old car. She frantically searches for her keys and her tears blur her eyesight. She's looking for the keyhole and finally finds it. She starts the engine and pulls the seatbelt and clicks it on. She wipes her tears from her face with her blue sweater. The ambulance takes off and so does she. She's racing behind them and she feels like time has slowed down. Like God doesn't want her to get to the hospital on time.
They get to the hospital and Hazel's mother notices it only took 5 minutes to get there. She runs in behind the nurses as they take Hazel to an emergency room. One of the nurses holds out her hand.
"Sorry ma'am you'll have to wait in the waiting room. She's going under surgery."
Augustus and his parents walk to the waiting room and she follows. All of them are crying. Augustus parents feel responsible for what has happened and they apologize over and over."It's not your fault. We don't even know what happened to her. I'd never hold you responsible."
In her head she wanted to hold them responsible but she was right. She couldn't blame them.
A few hours later, a doctor comes out bearing bad news.
