LOVE MARK
I help Hazel come into her house and we both sit on the couch.
"How've you been?" Says Hazel
"I've been fine but how've you been?" I reply.
"Just tired with all that's been going on." she replies as she looks into my eyes.
For some reason I feel half empty. I have Hazel back but there's something missing. I can't tell but I reach my hand out and we interlock our hands together. I keep staring at her, the way I stared at her the first day I showed up to group support with Issac.
"You know I love you right" I say softly
"Augustus" she says, "Is everything okay?"
"Always, I'm on a roller coaster that only goes up" I say as I wink and fake a smile at her.
The truth is that my cancer is back, at least I think it is. My prosthetic leg has been hurting lately but I haven't worked up the courage to tell my mom.
"Augustus, you can tell me anything. You know that right?" she says softly. Her voice scared and she squeezes my hand.
I somehow make a convincing smile and she feels relived. Her hand loosens the tight grip and I decided to make plans.
"Let's go watch a movie, or play games or do anything but be inside!"
She looks at me suspiciously but she agrees.
I get up from the couch and I nearly fall but I catch my balance. My face turns red and I feel the flash of heat rush to my cheeks. I put my hand out to grab her so we can get going. She giggles and grabs it and we're on our way.
As we pass the kitchen Hazel yells out "Going out with Gus, mom!"
"Please be safe! And take good care of her Gus, she just got out the hospital!"
I pull her out the doorway and before the door slams shut, I yell "Don't worry ma'am! I got everything under control!" And I add a wink too.
"So what would you like to do?" I ask, as we get into my van.
"I don't know, what would you like to do?" She replies.
"Seriously? I can't believe I'm dating a girl who doesn't know what to do when asked." I say, like teasing her to think. Instead she gives me an annoyed face and glares at me.
"You pick! You always want me to pick." she replies back, still glaring.
I smile and think about it because it's true. I always ask her what she wants but I never think of something. So I just smile and say, "Let's go drive around. Just you and me."
She smiles back. "Should I drive? Because your driving scares me."
She giggles.
I blush and agree. My driving is reckless. After all, the drive instructor only gave me my license because it was a cancer perk.
We get into her silver Toyota car and I start pondering about how I've never even been inside her car. I push that idea aside as I notice the pavement moving, but I realize that the car started moving. I look over to Hazel and it's a really pleasing site to see her concentrated. Just on the road and nothing else. Like she has no other worries in the world. Like she leaves them behind the further she drives.
I keep staring at her and she looks over to me and smiles, and I smile back. I look out the window and just stare at the quickly moving ground and my eyes find themselves moving upward until they can't anymore. The sky is cleared. Not one cloud and the birds are out singing their songs.
Then that's when it all changed.
