Lela's POV

"Lela! Lela!" Someone called my name. I was too sleepy to realize it was mom calling me.

"Lela! Lela!" This time the voice came with light slaps on my arm. I opened my eyes slowly, and saw that my mom was sitting over me.

"Ugh," I muttered, as I tucked myself under my blanket.

"Lela, please wake up. You are going to be late if you don't wake up now."

"Late for what, mommy?" I groaned.

"For school, Lela. Did you forget about Golden Pen?"

I flung the blanket away from my face. "I thought that was a dream."

"It's reality. So, you better wake up."

"Arrgghh." I pulled the blanket over my head.

"Lela! Stop acting like a child and get up."

"I don't want to go mommy. Call daddy, tell him that being homeschooled is what I choose," I said still hiding under my blanket.

"Lela Adams. Get up this minute!"

Uh-oh. She used the full names. I flung the blanket away and jumped to my feet. "I'm awake now, mommy. Please don't get mad."

"Better. Now, take your bath and get ready for school. After you finish with that, come downstairs for breakfast, okay?" The trace of anger had vanished from her voice.

"Okay, mommy." With that mommy left my room.

"You can do this Lela. What's one more school?"

I stepped out of the bathroom and I saw the hideous uniform on my bed. Mom must have placed it there when I was in the bathroom.

After getting into the uniform, I pulled long black socks from my drawer. Mom mentioned that I had to wear long black socks and black shoes. Fortunately, I had black flats.

When I was all dressed up, I stood in front of the mirror in my room, staring at my reflection, and I realized that the uniform wasn't so bad. It suited me, sort of.

My chocolate brown skin stared at the reflection of my ugly mess of hair in the mirror. I had long, jet black hair that hung to my back.

"I have to fix this," I said, referring to my hair. Grabbing the hair cream from my dressing table, I applied some on my hair and massaged my hair softly with the cream. Shuffling through perfume, cream, and the powder bottles scattered on my dressing table, I finally found my blue comb and combed through my hair. I tied my hair up in a neat bun.

"You look beautiful dear," I heard mom say and I turned towards my bedroom door, where mom stood.

I smiled, "Thanks, mommy."

Mom had high cheekbones which left a lingering smile. Her eyes were large, a chocolate-brown color and she had long ink-black lashes, just like me. She had the perfect high-arching eyebrows which were thinly plucked. Our faces were copies of each other except for the aging lines on her.

"So, are you ready to have breakfast?" Mom asked. I looked at my backpack hanging on my wardrobe door. It was a black vintage backpack.

"I haven't packed my bag, yet."

"I did that already for you when you were in the bathroom."

"Books?"

"Checked," Mom answered.

"Pens?"

"Checked," Mom answered again.

"Mathematic-"

"Mathematical set and calculator. All checked Lela." Mom folded her arms over her chest and smirked.

"Awwwn. Thanks a lot, mommy. What would I do without you?" I walked towards her and gave her a hug.

"Absolutely, nothing." We both laughed.

"Well, that means I can come downstairs for breakfast then." I smiled as mom led me out of the room.

"Wait, my backpack," I said as I hurried to my wardrobe and lifted my backpack, I swung it over my shoulder.

"Now, we can go." I smiled.

Mom drove into the school building. We passed through a huge black gate. Security men stood by the gate.

The school's compound was very wide and spacious. There were huge structures at every corner.

As we drove past, I saw a playground where there were swings, see-saws, merry-go-rounds, slides and many other playthings.

'It isn't just a high school. There were the nursery and primary school here as well,' I thought.

We also drove past a soccer field, a basketball court as well as a volleyball court.

"It's amazing, right?" Mom asked. I nodded my head without looking at her. The school was breathtaking. Painted in a creamy yellow and dark brown the buildings were.

Mom drove into a parking lot, and a few minutes later, we stepped out of the car. I saw students who were dressed in the same uniform as I was, walk past. They never failed to look at me as they did so.

"Let's go, Lela. We have to meet the principal. I have an appointment that I don't want to be late for as well." Mom said.

"Okay, mommy," I said as we started working towards a building.

"Are there boarders living here as well, mommy?" I asked, taking in the sight of the school.

"Yes dear. It's a day and boarding school." She smiled.

The school environment was so tidy, and so neat. There were finely trimmed flowers and trees around, and a soft wind was making a whooshing sound.

What do I know? It was a really expensive school. Everything I was looking at now, told me that.

You can't expect the students' school fees to go to waste. Can you?

The parents needed to see what was happening with their money. I could tell the school had a high standard. A very high one. I just hope to survive it here.

"Do you like what you see?" Mom asked.

"Mom!" I called out, my tone was pleading. I knew where she was going with this. She wanted to say 'I told you so. I told you'd like it here.' And, if there's anything I hated so much, it's being told, 'I told you so.'

"Fine. I won't tell you, 'I told you so.' She laughed.

"Mommy!"

"What is it, Lela?" I could see she was trying to hold in her laughter.

"You just said it, mom. You just said 'I told you so.'"

"Oh. Did I? I'm sorry if I did." She guffawed. A smile slowly crept up on my lips, it turned into a grin, and I couldn't hold it in anymore. So, I joined mom in the uncontrollable laughter. A group of students passed by and were startled. They ended up laughing, anyway.

We laughed so much that I didn't realize we had gotten to the building, that was when we became sober. I heaved a sigh when I saw the stairs in front of us.
