Temi's POV
“Temi! Temi! Temi, are you not going to school?” I heard mom banging on the door.
I ignored her and kept tossing around on my bed. I only had a short on because, I had become so fond of sleeping bare chested. I lifted my phone from the bedside table to check the time. It was 8:40a.m.
I don't want to see those bunch of annoying kids so, I'm just going to stay in here and sleep.
“Temi! Mo mò pe oti ji.” My mom banged on the door again. It was getting irritating and I was forced to sit up.
“I'm not going mommy!” I yelled
“Are you going to do this again this term, Temi?” She sounded distressed.
I ignored her again and my eyes travelled around the room. It was dark in here but I could see a little light emanating from behind the curtains.
My eyes strolled to where my guitar was sitting beside the shelf that held my books.
My guitar and my mom were the only important things to me. They were the only things I had left in this world.
I started playing the guitar when I was ten. Uncle Bayo, Mom's younger brother had taught me how.
“Uncle Bayo, that was amazing.” I said as I clapped my hands. That was the most beautiful song I had ever heard.
“Really? Well, thank you Temi.” Uncle Bayo smiled. I was grinning from ear to ear.
“Teach me, Uncle Bayo.”
“Hmm?” Uncle Bayo raised his head from his guitar to look at me.
“How to play the guitar, Uncle Bayo. Please teach me.” I pleaded.
Uncle Bayo lifted his eye brows, and then he looked down at his guitar again and stroke a note. I heard him laugh softly to himself. I wondered why he laughed and my smile turned into a frown.
“I'll teach you.”
“Huh?” I shot my head up to look at him.
Uncle Bayo dropped his guitar on the table and got to his feet, towering over me. Then, he bent over me, placing his hands on my shoulders.
“I said, I'll teach you how to play the guitar, Temi.” He spelled out with a smile.
“For reals?” I asked with excitement.
“For reals, Temi.” He nodded, still smiling at me.
I ran from there to go tell mommy. I was in euphoria.
“Mommy! Mommy!” I kept calling out.
“What is the matter, Temi?” Mom finally answered.
“Uncle Bayo is going to teach me how to play the guitar.” I said with my boyish smile.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The guitar I call mine now, was once Uncle Bayo's. He had given it to me on my thirteenth birthday. That was before the unfortunate event that took place. Since then, I have always cherished this guitar.
I averted my gaze from the guitar. I had no intentions of bringing up memories. They were too painful when remembered.
I turned my attention to the door. Mom wasn't banging on it anymore. I guess she grew tired and left. I heaved a sigh as I lay back on the bed. I had my back to the bed with my hands clasped behind my head and my eyes were fixed on the ceiling.
I kept staring at the ceiling until I drifted off to sleep.
Lela's POV
I was sitting down in a mathematics class. I finally got to meet Mr Caleb, the strict disciplinarian and the one skilled with the cane.
'That's according to Judith's safety rules. Hahaha.'
No doubt, he did look very strict. He was dark in complexion and wasn't very tall. He was wearing a blue shirt with black trousers.
Since the time he entered the classroom, he had never smiled. However, he was very good in explaining how to solve the mathematical problems. He made maths seem easy.
Once in a while my attention would stray to the canes he brought along with him. I know I said I wasn't easily intimidated but, the size and length of those canes, were terrifying.
Judith seemed to be an excellent math student. Because, she was active in the maths class, asking and answering questions.
Even the obese girl who everyone referred to as 'Akamu' when she entered the class few minutes before Mr Caleb did, seemed to be very good in maths as well.I was quite good in other subjects but, I found mathematics difficult. Daddy had gotten a math tutor for me once. Perhaps that's the reason my skills in maths had improved.
We had three more subjects and then went on the long break to get lunch.
