Lela's POV
I followed the girl in glasses in silence. I was angry because, the principal had left me like that. I looked up at the girl and she seemed to be in deep thought. I just sighed and bowed my head.
“You seem to be someone who sighs a lot.”
Huh? I looked up to see the girl smiling at me. Was she really talking to me? I thought.
I actually thought she was a snob. The only thing I could think of doing then, was just to smile back at her. “Not really.” I finally said.
'That principal. I thought.'
“What was that?” The girl was grinning.
Uh-oh. “Did I think out loud?” I squeezed my face.
She laughed, “You did. But, never mind. Just forget about the principal now, okay?”
I smiled, “Okay.”
“By the way, I'm Judith. Ekeh Judith.” She smiled as she stretched out her hand for a handshake.
“Nice to meet you Judith. I'm Lela Adams.” I said taking her hand and shaking it. Just then someone running down the stairs, hit me on my shoulder.
“Ouch!” I screeched as I reached for my shoulder.
“Sorry, Lela. We should go to class now. These stairs are always busy.” Judith said as she squeezed her face, making lines appear on her forehead.
I nodded and followed her up the stairs. We stopped in front of a door. There was an Inscription on it: “ SS2 C. Department of Art.”
“This is it?” I asked Judith, my heart pounding. The door was a bit ajar and I could hear the chattering of the students inside.
“Yes. Our Class. Let's go in.” She smiled as she pushed the door open. I followed behind her, I felt a lump grow in my throat and I gulped.
The classroom was painted in white. The desks were designed for two people to share a seat, it had lockers too.
Lots of Charts were hanging on the wall. One chart read; 'The Founding of States.' and another read; 'The Human body."
I looked behind me, and I saw two white boards occupying the whole wall behind me. When I turned around again, I met the gaze of the whole class. The chattering had quieted down.
'This is disturbing. I need to find a seat.' I thought.
My legs started to feel wobbly. I was so nervous.
“Hi everyone. To those of you who care to know. This is Lela Adams, our new classmate.” Judith introduced me. She had her hands wrapped around my shoulder.
I put up my right hand and said, “Hi. Nice meeting you all.” I forced a smile.
Some smiled back and chorused 'hi' and 'you are welcome.' While others just stared at me.
'Was there something on my face?' I wondered.
“Now, come with me, Lela. You are my new seatmate.” She smiled pulling me behind her. I smiled back at her.
'Finally, I was going to sit down.' I thought.
We walked past the first three seats in the middle row and finally, we stopped at the fourth seat.
“Here. Sit down. This is your seat from now on.” She smiled.
“Thank you Judith.” I said as I sat down and placed my backpack on the desk.
