Temi's POV

“Edith, I'd like to talk to you.” No matter how hard I tried, the words didn't come out as polite as I thought. She was sitting with her friends Kewve and Obusor as usual and when she looked up at me, she was smiling.

“Temi. What a surprise. And did I hear you right? You, you really want to talk to me?” She sounded sarcastic.

“Just meet me outside.” I told her in a no nonsense manner and walked outside the classroom. I waited for her a little longer than I expected and was getting impatient. I peeked into the classroom and saw her still sitting and chit-chatting with her friends. “How much more annoying could this girl be?” I muttered to myself. I wanted to walk back into the classroom and find another way to talk to her, but decided to wait a little bit more.

“You can't just order people around like they're your servant or something like that.” I heard someone say and when I turned to the side, I saw Edith standing by the door.

I snort-laughed and said, “look who's talking. Isn't that what you do? Pot calling kettle black.”

She stood in front of me and said in a serious manner, “I have my pride, Temi and you weren't polite in how you spoke to me. So, if Kewve and Obusor weren't pestering me so much to come out and hear what you had to say, I wouldn't be standing here with you.”

“Just shush it Edith, none of that is important right now!” I half-yelled. I was bottling all the anger I felt. I didn't want to explode and create a scene.

“Don't shush me Temi. And what is it you want? In fact, why am I still standing here.” She walked towards the door angrily.

“Why did you do it?” I asked and the words came out in a rushed manner. Edith stopped and turned to look at me. She seemed confused at first.

  “Do what exactly?” She asked.

“Don't act like you don't know.”

She stood in front of me again and asked, “If I knew, would I still be asking you?”

“Why did you push her?” I blurted. I watched as Edith's face went pale. She was shocked and it was silent for a while.

“I-I-I,” she stuttered when she finally spoke. “I don't know what you are talking about.” She finally managed to say and was about going back into the classroom when I grabbed her arm and pulled her back.

“Don't deny it, Edith. I saw you. I saw you push Lela into the pool.” I saw the terror in her eyes as the words left my mouth. Edith would have never believed that someone actually saw her.

“Temi, let go of me!” She whispered loudly and pulled her arm forcefully and it came off my grip. “I told you already, I don't know what you are talking about. Lela fell out of her own carelessness.”

“You're such a liar Edith. I wanted this to go down the easy way, but it's clear you don't want that, so I'm just going to go to the principal.” I turned to leave.

“It's your word against mine, Temi.” She said and I stopped and turned to look at her. “That's right. No one's going to believe you.”

“Why? Because your parents are benefactors?”

“That is true. Simply put it this way,” she strolled over to where I stood and said to my face, “I am untouchable.”

“Your parents aren't the only benefactors GPA has and you can't always have what you want Edith. One day, things are not going to go down your way. Do you know why? Because that's life...things don't always go our way.”

“I always have a way to make things go my way, Temi.” She smirked.

“You are going too far Edith. Lela could have died.”

“How was I supposed to know she couldn't swim? I only wanted her to get wet!” She half-yelled.

“Yeah right. You actually want me to believe that? A while ago, you denied knowing anything about the incident.”

“How could you think that I'll actually be capable of killing a person? I guess you don't really know me Temi,” Edith sounded like she was really hurt and I felt like it was genuine. “Believe what you want,” she continued, “to you, I'm just a jealous, spoilt and evil person. I can't believe we used to be friends. I can't believe that you could forget about our friendship because of that girl. Maybe I am jealous and maybe, I took things a little bit far, but try being in my shoes. What would you have done?” I thought I saw a tear in Edith's eyes, but before I could make sure, she was already walking into the classroom.

Perhaps, I didn't really know Edith. I knew she was spoilt and was good at making people feel bad about themselves. But I didn't think she'd take things as far as almost killing someone and she actually wanted me to believe all she said. But no matter how much I wanted to, I couldn't believe all she had said. To me, Edith was no longer the cute girl who became friends with me when I was having a hard time settling into Golden Pen Academy.

I strolled down the hallway with my hands buried deep in my pocket and was lost in thoughts of what I was to do. I couldn't tell the school authorities and if I told Lela that Edith was actually the one who pushed her, things could get ugly. The thought of being out of options frustrated me and only I wanted was to do the right thing, but I didn't know what the right thing was. So, I just decided to go check on how Lela was doing.

“Temi!” Someone called behind me and when I turned around, I saw Joel. His hands were in his pockets as he walked up to me.

“Where are you going to?” I asked him.

  “To see Lela.” He answered.

“oh, that's where I'm headed too.”

“Cool then. So, what were you and Edith talking about?”

“Huhn?” I never thought Joel had seen us, and I wondered whether he should know or not. I decided it was better not to tell him. At least not yet. “It was nothing.”

“You sure? Edith's face wasn't bright when she came back into the classroom and looking at you, I can say the same.”

“I'm just worked about what happened earlier.” It wasn't entirely a lie though.

“Yeah, me too,” Joel let out a sigh. “That girl would have just drowned like that.”

“Thanks to you, she didn't. You'll be feeling like Superman now o.” I teased and punched Joel's arm playfully. He smiled and rubbed his arm that got punched.

“But on a serious note, I haven't gotten myself. It all felt like a nightmare. Fear froze everyone and no one could act. I still can't explain how I got my senses working again before jumping into the pool.”

“Well,” I started, “Lela is alive and the nightmare's over.”

  “Yeah, you're right.” Joel smiled.
