Remy walks me to my first class, which happened to be Chemistry. Thankfully the need to concentrate if what chemicals I'm pouring together helps keep my mind off of Tanner.
By the end of class my brain is too fried from chemical equations to waste another thought on Tanner. I was so ready to get to art class and relax.
Sammy was sitting in her usual spot, fending off other students from taking the empty seat next to her. Despite everyone knowing I always sit next to her, they still try to slip in. Guess that's what happens when she's the best artist in the school. She also happens to be my best friend.
We met freshman year when I showed up late to class and the only open seat was next to her. She was the nerdy looking girl with pigtails and classes that no one wanted to talk to. Except me. I leaned right over and started up a conversation. We just seemed to click despite our many differences.
She was an honors student, I didn't have the drive for that. She wanted to be a doctor, I was undecided. She was naturally artistic, I couldn't even draw a stick figure.
Yet we worked.
As soon as I sit down Sammy turns to me, her eyes wide behind her glasses. She didn't even need to say anything for me to know what she was thinking. Thankfully the teacher hadn't shown up yet, giving me time to talk.
I take a breath before spilling. I tell her how Tanner dumped me and Remy shows up to give me a ride home as well as a ride to school that morning.
Sammy looked like she was about to scream or hug me. She ends up doing the latter, leaning over and wrapping her arms around me.
"I'm so sorry." She say before pulling away.
I give her a thankful smile. "I don't think I've fully processed it yet. Guess it didn't help that he had his lips attached to Vanessa when I walked in."
"Seriously?" Sammy scoff, disgust clear in her face.
I nod my head solemnly. The image of Tanner looking lips with Vanessa pops up in her mind. She quickly pushes the image away.
"Well, you're too good for him." Sammy says with a firm nod of her head.
"Thanks, Sam." I reply softly.
Not even a second later Sammy has a smile plastered on her face. "I guess that means you're free this Saturday?"
I let out a soft chuckle. "Yes, yes it does."
Sammy bounces excitedly in her seat. "Want to go to the mall? I feel like we haven't hung out forever."
Her words were true. We hadn't been able to hang out as much as we used to. Part of that was due to the amount of time she spend on homework and the other part was my time spent with Tanner. Looks like one of those are gone.
"Sure." I reply, causing the smile on her lips to widen. "It's a date."

Let me tell you, blocking out something painful is not easy, but Chemistry definitely helps.
