Lunch comes and I'm left standing with my tray of food looking for a place to sit. Normally I would sit with Tanner, but that spot's now taken by Venessa. Sammy and I don't have the same lunch period, which leaves me alone.
Deciding that standing there was pathetic and drew too much attention to myself, I slip out of the cafeteria and make my way to the library.
As I'm walking through looking for a table to sit at, I spot Remy. He was sitting by himself, hunched over an open book on the table.
I can only imagine how I looked, just standing there starting at him with a tray of food in my hands. Though now that I thought about it I don't remember every seeing him in the cafeteria. He never sat with the rest of the football team. I never gave it much thought. Until now that is.
As if sensing me staring Remy lifts his head and we lock eyes. He looks startled for a moment, but the look is quickly replaced with a smile. "You just gonna stand there or come sit?"
I shake myself out of my thoughts and walk over to the table. He moves his things to the side to make room for my tray.
"You normally eat in here?" I ask as I sit down next to him.
"Yeah, it's quieter. Easier to get homework done." He replies, reaching over and stealing one of my fries.
"You do homework during lunch?" I blurt out in disbelief. It was surprising to witness one of the "jocks" do homework.
Remy rolls his eyes at me. "Yeah, since I don't feel like staying up until 3 in the morning working on it, I start early during lunch."
"I guess I-" I trail off, unable to put my thoughts into words.
"We're not is some cheesy romance movie where the football player somehow manages to graduate high school without ever studying." Remy says in a dry tone. "Believe it or not I do read my textbooks and do the homework."
My cheeks instantly heat up with embarrassment. "I know that. Guess I'm just used to Tanner and him-"
"Him what?" Remy urges.
"We usually did our homework together." And by together I meant I did it and he copied.
Remy clearly wasn't buying my answer. It was almost like he could see right through me. "You mean you did both of your homework."
I nod my head, eyes dropping to my tray of food. He was right and I hated that. Tanner would often copy off her homework, never actually doing any work to figure out the answers. It didn't bother me much because I knew he could figure it out if he wanted to.
Remy opens his mouth to speak but seems to change his mind. He drops his eyes back down to his textbook instead.
Unable to take the silence I scoot closer to him and look at the textbook. "What you working on?"
Remy glances up at me before looking back at the book. "Economics. Have a feeling we're going to have a pop quiz today."
Remy and I had the same classes after lunch, English and Economics. I let out a groan at the mention of a pop quiz. "I hate his quizzes. They never make any sense."
"Hence why I'm reading the chapter." Remy points out. He moves the book closer to me to I could see the pages better.
That's how we spent the rest of lunch, pouring over the textbook, trying to cram all the information in our heads.
