Lay: My Little Helper

I have to deal with one of the most annoying aspects that can appear in life. It's called cancer - something I can't help for myself.

I got it when I was 13 and I feel like it's a curse. Now I'm 17 and I've been told it will never go away.

Will I survive to an old age? Will I ever find a man to marry and have a family with? Will people still care for me?

Those questions and more circle my brain for ages. I just will have to continue my normal life consisting of school, work, and reading (a past time of mine).

On a lovely day when I find myself in the park riding my bike with my friend I start to feel faint and woozy. I slow down and end up sitting on a bench. Then darkness overpowers me.

-5 hours later-

I wake up to beeping noises. A heart moniter. An IV. And there are many contractions hooked up to me. A nurse hovers over me, watching me. She smiles when she sees that my eyes are opening.

"A tumor overpowered your brain. Your cancer has sprung back. I'm sorry sweetie. Your friends brought you here. They are waiting along with your family," she smiles sadly.

She brings in my family. A doctor enters my room as well.

"I have some unfortunate news to inform you all. This tumor...it's a type four tumor. These could be the last weeks of your daughter's life.  I'm so sorry...we'll try our best to keep her alive."

My friend Luna walks in along with a guy around our age behind her. These must be my friends. I only remember Luna...

"Hey, this is Lay. He helped me bring you here. He was taking a walk when you passed out."

That's who he is...my other "friend"...

"Fighting! You can pull through!" Luna gives me a small smile.

As the days pass by, I wait around with Luna and my family talking and crying about my last moments. Why all this fuss? I read a book that was oh-so-beautiful about a boy and girl totally in love. They both had cancer and eventually one of them died. Hazel Grace and Augustus...yes, those were those names. Their story should teach them the sense they need about how life should be lived; full of happiness and love with some smiles thrown in.

The idea of reading does not excite them but on the first day of the fifth week Lay comes walking in with a copy The Fault in Our Stars.

"We can read this story together. It seems like a wonderful story and it will pass the time more quickly. And I'm sorry for not being here until now. I was finishing up my military service. I happened to be home for a day when you passed out."

I am speechless - I don't what to say. Thank him? Smile and fangirl?

He smiles a beautiful smile and starts reading. We finish the book in a day - each reading every other chapter.

By the end we are smiling while tears glisten our cheeks.

"Everything alright...?" the doctor questions.

"Of course! The best book award goes to The Fault in Our Stars!"

"Even better news - you are free of cancer!"

Lay celebrates by planting a kiss on my lips.
