I heard a commotion. There was a shout from outside and the familiar ringing of a seraph blade reached my ears, dread filling my mind. This was it; Valentine was coming to kill me.
I hated myself for the small feeling of relief that clouded my head. I was supposed to hold on for Jace, for Alec; but a part of me couldn't. I physically felt dead already.
The door burst open and two figures ran in. I was confused at the demeanour and pace of the newcomers - none of Valentine's men ever entered with this much haste, and Valentine himself certainly never did. I squinted, trying to make out who it was before they got to me and I saw the bright red hair before I saw the glow of the seraph blade.
"Clary?" I mumbled, not sure if I was at the point of hallucinating.
"Oh my God, Sam," Clary's eyes filled with tears at the sight of me. "I'm here to get you out."
"We need... to help Jace too..." I slurred, only now recognising the second person as Dot.
"We will, we will, we're going up there now, I just need you to stay conscious for me," Clary begged, "Can you do that for me?" I nodded, wincing and she took out her stele, intending to try and heal me.
"That won't work," Dot said, "Only an extremely powerful warlock will be able to heal her at this point - I can't do it, the injections have made me far too weak to even attempt it."
I nodded again, whispering Magnus' name. My sister agreed and, as gently as she could, placed an arm under my knees and held the other up, ready to catch me. She looked at Dot, trying to find a jacket or something to cover my bare torso but neither of them had anything. Dot flicked her hand and the ropes fell away from my wrists. I fell into Clary's outstretched arms and groaned at the movement - my broken bones and open wounds protesting. My body had been in the same stiff position for days.
"It's all right Sam, we're gonna get you to Magnus and you'll be okay," Clary muttered, though it sounded more like she was trying to convince herself rather than me.
Dot helped Clary carry me up above deck, where she put me down against a pillar, just out of sight of Valentine - who I knew was right around the corner. I savoured the moment when the cool sea breeze hit my face for the first time in who knows how many days. My moment of rest didn't last for long though as the salt from the air began to sting at my gaping wounds.
Clary stepped out, staying close to me, ready to grab me at any moment. "Jace!" She called.
"Clarissa, how nice of you to join us," I heard Valentine's voice, "Perhaps you can convince your brother to finish what he started."
"Jace, I need you to listen to me," Clary said, ignoring him, "Everything I said before - I was under a spell. Run!" She ducked back and picked me up with a new found strength that I suspect Dot was magically helping with.
Jace ran towards us, taking out two of Valentine's men as he went. Dot tore a hole in the barrier that was around the ship, allowing us to jump overboard without getting fried. Valentine's shouts were drowned out as Clary threw me into the water before she and Jace jumped in after me. The impact of my body colliding with the water was pure agony. The drop had been at least fifteen feet and the initial contact, along with the influx of salt water, nearly drove me mad.
I screamed out and Clary and Jace tried to swim over to help me but the tide was too strong. "Sam!" Both Clary and Jace yelled.
I couldn't move any of my broken bones and I was too weak to keep myself afloat. The last thing I saw was my sister's terrified eyes as I went under, before everything went black.

My eyes flew open and I turned to the side immediately, vomiting a mix of seawater and blood.
