"Lady Vysenna.."
"Lady Vysenna, please wake up!"
"Huh?" I mumbled as I opened my eyes. I could see Nori looking at me "We are leaving soon!" I nodded and the dwarf left the room. I guess I really am going to an adventure with the dwarves. Just maybe I don't have to be alone anymore because really, was being alone something I wanted to be used to?
"When are we leaving?" I asked Kili, who was stuffing pieces of smoked chicken in to his travelling bag. "Good morning, Vienna! Soon!" he yelled as he ran off to get last of the supplies. Poor Bilbo, I thought, the dwarves had eaten or taken most of his food. Still, it won't matter if he decides to join us. "Are you ready, lady Vysenna?" asked Gandalf.
"I'll manage," I mumbled as I looked around in the hobbit's home. My heart sank as I noticed that Dwalin was not with the other dwarves. "Are you worried about something?" asked the wizard. "Just wondering, why some of the dwarves aren't here," I mumbled as I tried to look as peaceful as possible. Gandalf told me not to worry, as he left Bilbo's house humming a foreign tune. He was in a terrific mood. I tried to feel joyful too but I couldn't help but feel my heart hurting. Why did the brute dwarf mean so much to me? "He is just a good warrior, the company needs him," I mumbled, trying to make myself believe that this was the only reason I cared.
Soon enough the dwarves had packed their belongings and we walked up to the Prancing Pony, Dwalin and Bofur still missing. Maybe it really was better for the big dwarf not to join us. I couldn't let myself get distracted.
"Here you go," I mumbled as I handed an apple to my pony, Nann. He had been my only company in a long time and a true friend. "Maybe I shouldn't take you with me, I don't want to lose you," I said as I patted the pony's head.
"Hey Lassie!"
My heart skipped a beat as I heard a strong, low voice behind me. "Dwalin," I mumbled as I turned around. The big brute looked even better in the day'light, I could even see a glimpse of green in his greyish eyes. "What can I do for you?" I asked. Breath, I thought, don't let this dwarf get to you. "I heard you talking about wanting whiskey yesterday," Dwalin said as he handed me a bottle of Shire's best whiskey. He let his fingers touch mine as I took the bottle from him and I could feel sparks all over my body. "A gift for the trip", winked Dwalin as he turned around and walked to his pony. I was too shocked to even thank him. I could see some of the dwarves nodding as if they were approving Dwalin's gift.
"Do you want to bet with us?" asked Fili. His brother Kili nudged me "Fifteen silver pennies that Bilbo doesn't come." I jumped on my horse as I replied "30 silver pennies that he'll come." Gandalf made the same bet as I did. At least there were some of us, who believed in the Hobbit.
I was already beginning to lose hope as we rode closer to the Shire's border. "Well? Are you giving me my money?" smirked Kili. "Just a few more minutes," I mumbled. I didn't want the young dwarf to win as I hated losing. "I blame you, Bilbo" I mumbled as I began to search money from my pouch.
"Wait! Wait! I'm coming too!" I smiled as I noticed the hobbit running towards us. Thorin didn't seem to pleased as he told Fili and Kili to get him a pony. The hobbit was startled as he had never rode one before. I guided Nann close to him and helped him steady the pony. "Oy Vysenna," yelled Fili and threw me a bag of silver pennies. I winked at him, pleased to have won.
"You took wages on weather I come or not?" Bilbo looked shocked. "Don't worry," I said as I nudged Bilbo, "I knew you would come."
At least the start of the adventure was good. Our burglar had joined us and as I was sipping one of the best whiskeys in Middle-Earth, I couldn't help but to feel happier than ever before. I liked to be a part of a group.
"We camp here tonight," yelled out Thorin. I helped Fili and Kili tie up the ponies. As I walked back to the company, I noticed the brute standing against a tree. "You know, they can do it on their own also," he mumbled, looking angry. I mumbled "I know, I wanted to help them." Dwalin sighed as he replied "They are young and have to learn to do things on their own."
I laughed "I'm just as young as they are." The big brute looked shocked as he blurted out "You're that young?" Balin, his older brother, smirked as he walked passed us and I could have sworn, he mumbled "Dwalin got himself a younger woman."
"Is that a problem?" I hissed as I tried to walk passed the big dwarf. He slipped his arm around my waist and pulled me close to him. Dwalin then whispered "You should stay close to me, there are all sorts of monsters lurking in Middle-Earth." I struggled in his grip as I blurted out "I know, how to defend myself." He sighed as he let me go, clearly displeased. I walked passed him and whispered "I'm the worst of the monsters."
I tried to stay away from Dwalin that night but where ever I went, he followed. He tried to be subtle about it and act it out as a simple accident but I knew he followed me on purpose. He was there sitting next to me, as I ate with the company. He was there right next to me as I choose a corner, where do sleep. "I do not need you to follow me," I blurted out as he lied down next to me. "I know," he mumbled, closing his eyes.
"Then why do follow me?" I asked him, silently cursing myself for not being able to be quiet. Dwalin looked me in the eye as he mumbled quietly "You're so little and fragile." I snorted as I talked back "I may appear smaller than I really am." He laughed out loud, startling some of the dwarves from the company. "Whatever you say, lassie," he mumbled, still trying to control his laughter. This was one of the moments, where I just wanted to turn to a big wolf and make them shiver in fear. I sighed, I knew I couldn't turn just to prove a point.
"Our dwarven woman like to be protected," Dwalin suddenly blurted out. "I'm not from your race," I said, turning my back on him. "I know you are not," he sighed.
I slowly drifted away to sleep and right before succumbing to my dreams, I could have sworn that I heard Dwalin say "You are better than a thousand dwarven woman."
