Dan bounced his leg anxiously out of habit. He had been watching netflix with Katie for a few hours now, even though she had fallen asleep almost halfway into an episode of the office. Ashton and Nia had left to go shopping in the next town over.
Are you still watching?
"Fuck off netflix," Dan hissed as he looked around for missing remote.
It was probably somewhere on the other side of the room, meaning he would have to get up if he wanted to continue watching. And right now all he wanted do is sit and wallow in his guilt.
Dan groaned and threw his head back in defeat. "Guess that's the end of that," He mumbled to himself.
He continued to stare at the screen until it faded. A sigh escaped his lips, as his eyes darted around the room. He never really looked around before now. Her walls were filled with several pictures of Katie's old dog, Daisy, old and new photos of Katie and Shania, and one small collage of what he could only assume was her family.
He smiled at how happy Katie used to look. Maybe she was happier before he had come into her life, but if anyone knew his to fake a smile for a photo it was Dan.
"Damn it," he cursed under his breath as he wiggled free from Katie's sleepy embrace.
He stood and pushed his hands deep into his pockets, still admiring the photos. Suddenly he remembered Phil again, and pulled his phone out of his pocket. He fiddled with it for a bit before working up the courage to turn on the screen. He took a deep breath and turned on the screen.
6:56PM
(1) New message!Dan felt sick. Why did he have to go and text his stupid ex boyfriend? Maybe it was the guilt that still hadn't settled in his stomach ever since they split. He clicked on the message and read it to himself.
"You're coming home for good?"
He fiddled with his phone for a moment, clenching it in his sweaty hand. Was he going home? Phil broke him twice already, was he really going to let him do it a third time?
His eyes darted from his phone and back to Katie. He groaned and stuffed his phone back in his pocket. There was no use texting somebody as stubborn as Phil. This was something he had to do in person.

"Wow aren't you pathetic?" Ashton chuckled as he spotted Katie, still in the same spot she was when they left.
"Huh?" She hummed and sat up on her elbows, blinking helplessly as the light blinded her temporarily.
Nia sat down on the couch beside her with a satisfied sigh, "When did Dan leave?"
Katie furrowed her eyebrows and looked around for her phone, finding it in between the cushions. She immediately unlocked it.
She shook her head with a sleepy shrug, "I-I must have dozed off. I didn't know he left."
"Did he text you?" Ashton asked, hoping he didn't do what he thought he had done.
Katie exhaled through her nose with a nod, "Yeah it says, I went home.. Well not really home.. I just had some unfinished business elsewhere. Sorry."
Ashton quickly pulled out his phone, he knew exactly what had happened. Dan was a tender boy, so it wasn't hard to get under his skin. Especially when you were his boyfriend for 4 years.
"What does that mean?" Nia asked in confusion.
"I'll be back." He spit after reading a text on his phone.
Katie looked at him in confusion as he made his way to the door, "Why?"
"Don't worry about it." He reassured her with a smile before disappearing to his truck.
Once inside he slammed his fist on the dash and let out a frustrated sigh, "I made a mistake. Yeah okay, Dan. Of course you did. Dating the perfect girl for you is a fucking mistake."
He shook his head as he slammed on the gas and sped off into the darkness. To Phil's place, of course.
Once he arrived, he parked on the side of the road and cut the engine.
"Goddamn idiot," he groaned as he grabbed his keys and jumped out, slamming the door shut.
"Dan?" He shouted as he banged his fist on the door, causing it to creak open.
The scent of cherries and flowers filled the air. Ashton took a deep breath as he remembered when Dan lived here. The best and worst times in Dan's life all happened in this very flat.
His phone beeped at him just as he was about to let himself in. "No Ash, Phil was the mistake." A text from Dan read.
He paused as he read over the message. Phil was the mistake, so why the fuck was he busting into his best friend's ex boyfriends flat?
He sighed and backed up with a turn, and walked back to his truck. He sat inside for a moment.
"I guess, Dan isn't an idiot." He said to himself and started up the engine again.
But he was.
