BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP...
Wh-What? What's... going on?!
I lift my head up slowly from the cold and solid floor to find the whole room dark, with a red light blinking off and on slowly in the main corridor outside.
The room door is open, something is clearly wrong right now. I get up slowly, my head throbbing with pain, and struggle to make my way to the room door. I peak outside and-
"Watch it!"
My head being severed from my neck gets missed by an inch, another resident of the facility runs to the other end of the corridor in a rush. More follow behind him, all having this look of happiness and relief on their face.
What the hell is going on?
I glance to the digital clock that hung down the end of the corridor. I squint my eyes a bit and read: 4:25 PM, 4th October 2017.
Wait a minute...
When they gave me that shot that made me pass out, it was around the same time. I've been unconscious for a whole twenty-four hours?!
I start to feel out of place, I need to know what's going on NOW.
I see Bryson running towards the exit, I stop him when he reaches my room. "What's going on?" I ask, my eyes darting to every corner of the hallway to find an answer on my own.
"Everything's unlocked, the system isn't working. We're getting out Elliot. We're free!" Bryson says and places a hand on my shoulder. He then returns to jogging to the building's exit.
I would not have believed him if it wasn't for the fact that I can hear people arguing and workers trying to get people back inside the facility.
I rush to my bed and slide my hand under the mattress, taking out a small notebook that contains important phone numbers and addresses.
I place that in my pocket and grab the grey hoodie given by the facility, that hangs on my bed frame. I put it on then place my hands in its pockets. I walk to the room door and peer out, making sure no employees saw me. A few other residents were exiting the facility from other corridors.
I start to jog to the exit, pushing the main door open and breathing the fresh outside air and filling my lungs. It is reviving to be outdoors once again after months. I didn't realise that I missed it.
I climb down the marble-tiled staircase of the facility and to the brick-ground. I make my way to the large metal gates that are normally shut by a system of secure locks and codes. It seems reassuring and odd at the same time. I feel a wave of uncertainty wash over me, that I'm not prepared to go back into the world.
I make a run for the tall and metal gates, guarding the facility for the mentally ill. I would laugh at that, many people resident in it aren't mentally ill at all, but I'm too busy trying to get my life back into shape.
I slip out of the gates and walk to the main road, no vehicle to be seen or heard. I glance around at the various people running off, I can't see Jayden anywhere.
She would have waited for me, right? She's my friend... but I did yell at her. Did she leave me? She probably hates me.
I look back to the building that all of a sudden looks dull and eerie... like it didn't feel or look that way before.
