"My best friend? I just met you."

"Let's go back to the house, you can rest there."

She had an obvious frown upon her face. She was cute. She seemed like she really cared about me. I wonder if she is who she says she is. I hadn't started to follow her yet, "Where is your house?" I asked, "And who is there?"

"It's just up the road, about a quarter mile. And the group got cut down to half. So there's six more of us. And you." She answered.

I looked around. Taking in the scenery, I saw nothing but grey skies, ashes, and debris in all directions. Gunfire and choas could be heard in the distance. A tank was sitting behind me, destroyed. There were mounds of human corpses, some with rifles. There were women and children too. I became sick in my stomach from the smell. I started walking toward the girl and she took me to this house.

"We're here. He's okay!" She shouted as we entered the front door, "There is a problem though."

"What?" Two people shouted from different rooms.

"He doesn't know who I am."

"How is that a problem?" I was becoming frustrated with the situation.

"The fact that you don't know who she, of all people is, mean you lost your memory." One of the guys said, "The RV probably hit you in the head when you got your arm stuck. By the way, how is it feeling? I'm a doctor."

The house wasn't strong. I knew it. The paint was coming off the walls, the wood creeked and cracked, and the food was scarce. We needed to leave. "My arm feels better, but I think I better get some sleep before I head off tomorrow."

"Head off where?" The cute girl asked.

"Well, I'm not going to stay here. You people are crazy, this house will only be good for hiding until they find us. They have tanks. I may not know who you people are, but I remember there are people trying to kill. Everyone. And I'm not being served to them like dinner. I don't go down without a fight."

The girl came close to me. Uncomfortably close. She grabbed my shirt tight with both hands, and kissed me. Something strange happened after that. It didn't feel right. Like we weren't supposed to kiss each other. I knew her name was Esther now. It came back to me. I also knew that we had been in a strong relationship before, but I didn't know what kind. That night, we stayed up and talked over a lantern, alone. She told me about a guy she knew that she always had a thing for. She asked me if I knew who it was. I said no and she giggled and layed down looking up at me. I have to admit, she was beautiful in the dim light, with her head on the pillow. I layed next to her. She came closer to me, near my rib cage. She put her head on my shoulder, and her arm wrapped around me. One of my arms were behind my head, and one supporting her back. We layed there, thinking about endless possibilities for the days to come. Would we survive the destruction of the world? Would we have to moarn a tragic death?

We fell asleep.
