The next Monday, I'm dropping Robin off for her first day at Leesville High. She had aced her entrance exam, and the principal had organised her timetable so she could start today. I drop her near the front steps and scowl when I see Adam waiting for her with a grin. I grab her arm when she steps off the bike and hands me her helmet. Flipping my visor up, I nod towards Adam.
"Do we need to have 'the talk'?" I ask, laughing when she screws her nose up.
"Ew. No! I know how everything works. And I can handle him," she says with a grin. We watch as he walks over to us, and when his smile looks a little too friendly, I rev the bike loudly, making him jump.
I laugh when Robin scowls at me and turn the engine off. "Wait, I've got something for you," I tell her. She pauses and looks at me with a raised eyebrow. I reach into the inside pocket of my jacket and pull out the iPhone I got for her. "For you. It's got everyone's numbers on it already. In case you need anything," I shrug, and see her looking at me with wide eyes.
"You didn't have to," she says quietly.
I nod. "I know, but you've earned it helping with Banjo and everything, and I need to know I can get in touch with you if I have to,"
She nods and throws her arms around my neck, squeezing me tight. "See you later," she says, smiling as she turns to talk to Adam.
I watch her walk away and turn the bike back on, smirking when all the kids turn round to look. I'm tempted to wheelie out of the car park but I'm honestly trying to be a good role model now.
I ride to the hospital to see Banjo; stopping at Shelby's to grab some muffins for him on the way. He's starting to look far too skinny, and I'm determined to fatten him up again. I walk into his room and see him sitting up in bed, running his fingers through his hair. His head lifts up as he hears me enter.
"Good morning, sunshine!" I chirp, dumping the bag of muffins on the table next to his bed.
"Lenni?" He says.
"Yeah?" I busy myself straightening the blankets on his bed that he's managed to twist up overnight.
"You look like shit," he says, and I laugh.
"Thanks- Wait, what?" I look up at him in shock. "What?"
"You look like shit," he repeats, looking at my face.
"You can see?" I ask, not sure if he's messing with me.
He nods. "Kind of. Everything's a bit blurry. It's like I've been staring at the sun and I'm waiting for my eyes to adjust again. I just woke up this morning and it was there,"
I jump on the bed and grab his face, looking into his eyes. "Hi!" I squeak.
He puts his hand on my face and kisses my forehead, before ruffling my hair. "Hi,"
"Am I interrupting?" I hear a voice say, and turn to see Dr O'Brian at the door, grinning.
"He can see!" I squeal again, and his eyebrows shoot up.
He comes over to Banjo and shines a light in his eyes, his smile widening when Banjo repeats his description of what he can see. "That's fantastic news. I'm going to order another CT scan but this is all positive. Any other symptoms?"
Banjo shakes his head. "Doc, I wanted to ask if we can reduce the pain meds?"
The doctor pauses. "Can I ask why?"
"They just make me feel groggy and sleepy, I'd rather be in a bit of pain,"
He nods and looks at his chart. "We'll switch you from IV morphine to oral, and reduce it slowly. You need to tell us if your pain levels rise though, and we can adjust the meds. I'm going to get a physio to come and see you later and see about getting you more mobile. The more you're moving, the better you'll feel. Dr Ryan wants another scan of your arm too, and if everything keeps progressing the way it has been, we'll look at discharging you in a few days,"
