18: They Want You

Things have settled down over the last couple of weeks. We still had to have a Bulldogs escort whenever we went anywhere, but we hadn't seen either of those two guys hanging around since the afternoon at Shelby's. I figured they probably realised they weren't going to get close without taking on the whole club. Robin had gotten used to it, mostly. She especially enjoyed it when I took her shopping last weekend and insisted on dragging Jay and Smiler into Victoria's Secret, purposely spending a lot longer in there than necessary.

Lena had celebrated her first birthday, surrounded by her family and the entire club. I had never seen so many presents piled up in one place. The girl was well and truly spoilt. We'd had Mel's birthday party last week too. It was an amazing day, but Mel ended up in floods of tears when she realised what mine and Ash's messages had really been about. She'd been sat at a table in the clubhouse - which was now fixed up and had a proper wall again - when her dad, Dale and Ali had appeared behind her. They had spent a few days with her before having to return to Cali. Before her dad had left, he'd demanded that Mel, Shelby and I head up there for a girls holiday soon, and had promised surf lessons for us all. Of course, that conversation had quickly turned into a 'take the piss out of Lenni' session when I'd voiced my disgust at going into the sea. I mean, come on! It's basically a global toilet for billions of animals! Why would I want to be coated in that? Also, a blue whale ejaculates gallons of sperm every time. Have you never wondered exactly why the sea is so salty? I do not want that anywhere my hair, or mouth, or just anywhere near me in general really.

George had returned from Phoenix again yesterday and had given me a pay rise to celebrate a huge win. He'd also spoken briefly about giving me more responsibility in the office and wanting me to help out more with the actual cases. My legal experience pretty much amounts to running from the police and talking myself out of an arrest, so I'm not sure how much help I'll be, but I'll take the extra money anyway.

Robin and Adam were doing good - mostly - and she was relieved to be coming up to the end of her junior year. She'd found a program through a college in Phoenix that helps potential students gain experience at hospitals, which will help with her college applications and her course credits in the future. That had, of course, led to another argument between Robin and the club. Jay had told her that we couldn't guarantee she would be able to do it, because of the club still being in lockdown. Robin had pretty much called all the guys every name under the sun and spent the next few hours sulking and ignoring them all. The girl is good, I'll give her that because Jay gave in just to get her to talk to him again. So now they were trying to work out how she could attend the program but still be safe.

I'd spent the evening lounging on my sofa with a bottle of wine, watching chick flicks and eating far too much junk food with Robin, and we both jump up when the front door slams open, crashing into the wall. Suddenly, Jay, Smiler and Skids are barrelling into the living room, breathless and wide-eyed. Pest runs into the room, finally emerging from the kitchen where he had hidden after refusing to join our girly evening, and we all stare at the newcomers before I stand up and walk to the front door. I knew it. I slam the door closed again and turn to fix my glare on them.

"There's a fucking hole in my wall!" I say, pointing to the smashed up plaster where the handle had connected with it. "What the hell?"

Smiler looks guilty for about a second, before rolling his eyes and grabbing a piece of paper off Jay, shoving it under my nose. "Sorry. We thought this was more important than a wall," he grunts.

I raise an eyebrow and take the paper from him, frowning when I see what it says.
