I got home a lot later than I wanted, due to a small robbery at a jewelry store. Mom wasn't entirely happy.
"Where have you been, Sparrow?!" Mom screeched, her hair falling out of her neat bun.
I nervously smiled, "I got caught in some traffic! I mean, it was a mess out there, a robbery! I saw- " Word of advice, don't tell your Mom that you witnessed a jewel robbery.
Her face went from bright red, to paper white, "You WHAT?!"
W-what's going on? Phantom sounded like he had just woken up from a nap.
I covered my ears and yelled, "I'll be up doing my homework, okay?"
She continued ripping her hair out, "You could have DIED! What were you thinking?!"
I slammed the door to my room, "You would be surprised by how many times I almost die, Mom."
What was that? Phantom asked, Who died?!
I rubbed my head, "At this point, someone dying would have been half as bad as that shrieking."
Phantom sighed, Humans. Very strange. You still need to meet Spider-Man.
"Right," I threw my backpack on my bed, "Suit please?"
I watched in the mirror as Phantom's white form covered my body.Slowly, it turned red; the suit that I had originally made for myself was in place of the white one.
"I thought you didn't like this suit?" I couldn't help but smirk a bit.
You are lucky, Phantom grumbled, Let's just go.
***
I landed at exactly the same spot Spidey and I had had a hasty departing. The sun was starting to lower into the horizon, casting a gold glow across the buildings.
Sparrow, Phantom growled, Something's wrong.
"What could be wrong now?" I asked exasperated.
"Scarlet Spider, we meet again . . . "
I gulped, "Oh. That kind of wrong."
I turned around; Kaine was standing right behind me. His shadowy figure flickered in and out of existence.
I suggest we run, Phantom said.
What is it with you and the running ideas? I asked mentally.
"Wait," I told both of them, "What do you want, Kaine?"
Kaine's hand clenched into a fist, "I have been hunting your symbiotes since the beginning of my planet. Those pure evil beings never stopped killing and hurting.
"I am the only one who has successfully vanquished them. I have only just heard of the symbiotes who have come to live here."
Phantom hissed, Don't fall for it.
I shook my head, "Look, I'm not- Phantom's not evil. He needs a body to help himself survive. I gave into it willingly."
Kaine snarled, "Then both of you are to be destroyed."
You are terrible at pep talks, Phantom yelled, as I dodged a long dagger of shadow.
Kaine threw forward more daggers, all seemingly coming out of no where. I managed to dodge all of them as I backed up against the edge of the building.
"Evil will be cleansed from the universe." Kaine roared, throwing a side kick at my ribs.
This time I wasn't so lucky as his leg caught my rib cage and threw me off the roof.
I raised my wrist and shot a web just in time as I swung in between a semi truck and a tourist bus.
I swung for a while until my arms ached and Phantom complained about the waste of web fluid in my body.
Panting from so much exertion, I finally rested on another roof, "That was fun."
Fun? Phantom shouted, Are you kidding me?!
I crouched down and held my bruised ribs, "What part of getting attacked and having your stomach kicked in isn't fun?"
"I shall give you more fun, Scarlet Spider," a voice growled.
"Oh come on!" I yelled, shooting to my feet.
Stay and fight, Phantom said.
I double pressed both my wrists as two stingers shot out, "Okay, Shadow. You have your fight."
Kaine might have smiled if I could see his face, "You were a worthy opponent, boy. Just be prepared to lose."
"Why don't you try your own advice?" I jumped up and shot a web at Kaine's foot. It stuck him to the roof and just gave me enough time to stab him right in the chest with my stinger.
Not a good idea, Phantom shrieked.
Kaine grabbed my wrist and squeezed hard, "Do you think that pitiful poison will stop me?"
I winced in pain, "Just to slow you down."
Kaine laughed softly, and tightened his grip. I though my wrist would snap.
I brought my other fist up and smashed his face. He let go of my wrist and stumbled away from me, the web making him fall flat on his back.
I quickly covered him in webbing, until he was completely stuck.
Now what? Phantom asked.
Before I could reply, a dagger flew up through the webbing and thunked against me chest.
Shock quickly turned into pain and realization. I could hear Phantom shouting at me, and Kaine ripping his way out of his cocoon.
On autopilot, I turned with heavy limbs and flew through the city on my webs as fast as I could. The dagger in my chest had faded and only left an open wound.
I stumbled and lost my footing, crashing through a window and sprawling onto someone's floor.
The last thing I remembered was Phantom whispering, I'm sorry, Sparrow. And a familiar face staring down at me.
