Just like I guessed, Janice was calling who knows looking for me. She was so angry at me.

"You had me so worried!" Janice rolled her eyes. "Hanging out with people I don't know and telling your brother you'd be home!" She said flinging her arms all over the place.

"I told Josh I would be home for dinner. It's just now seven."

"Yeah, and we're starving!" Josh yelled from the living room.

"Now, I've got some things to do. I want you to look through the groceries I bought today and cook up something!"

"You sure she knows hot to cook?" Josh walked into the kitchen.

"Yes I actually do." I rolled my eyes. "Ungrateful brat."

"What was that?" Jan asked tapping her fingernails on the counter.

"Nothing." I groaned.

"Whatever!" Jan headed upstairs.

"Don't worry about her." Derek walked in with a cup of coffee. "She's just having one of her days."

"Derek what are you.." Josh started to ask.

"Josh go sit in the couch, my new step-daughter and I have some food to cook." Derek winked.

Dinner consisted of pizza, pasta, and salad. Small talk, chewing, and sipping was all that could be heard. Jan found out Derek helped and was angry about that too. Before I could finish, she began putting the food away and sent me to bed.

The next day, I walked alone to English. Jackson was ready in there waiting in the seat beside mine.

I sat down and pulled out my notebook.

"Hey.." Jackson said quietly.

"Yeah?"

"Can I have a piece of paper?"

"Sure." I ripped out a sheet and handed it to him. "Need a pencil?"

He shook his head.

"Alright." I replied.

"Hey Megan?"

"Yeah?"

"I'm.. I'm sorry about the other night."

"It's fine don't sweat it." I shrugged.

"Yeah, but I shouldn't of just drove away. I was just afraid."

"Of what?" I asked.

"Good morning class." It was Mrs. Garcia. "Get a book we're reading again today."

I looked over at Jackson who started writing in the piece of paper, instead of paying attention to the book.

"Here." Jackson handed me the piece of paper as class ended.

"What's this?" I asked looking at the folded piece of paper I was gripping in my right hand.

"You asked me why I was afraid, there's my answer."

"Alright. I'll read it."

"Thanks." he smiled and then surprised me with a bear hug.

In Spanish I completely ignored Alx and devoted my attention to the note. I unfolded it and began to read.

Megan,

I'm not normal. Never have been never will be. Just a rough past. You asked my why I was afraid and that was my bet answer. You seem so trustworthy and I think you could help me. I was hoping to come over to your house today and talk things over. I can see a strong friendship in our future. Thanks for being there. Sorry if I don't talk much in science, I have a lot of make up work to finish. And I won't be in Civics but I'll talk to you at lunch and seventh. Love you. :)

He was right. Science was so quiet. People were wondering if we were friends. Of course we were. Always would be. He wasn't in civics just like he said.

Finally art came and there he was. His eyes looked bloodshot like he had been crying, but he greeted me with a grin when our eyes met.

"You okay?"

"Yeah." He replied.

"You're lying." I said, concerned.

"Ill tell you if I can come over."

"Of course."

"Good I'll drive both of us to your place."

"Alright. Josh won't be there. He's taking his driving test again. My stepmom Jan is going to run some errands, and my stepdad is working overtime."

"So just you and me?"

"Just me and you." I grinned.
