*Two weeks later*

I was in class, almost dozing off when a text came in.

“Hiya babe! Miss you so much. Hope things are alright with you. You in class? – Lea”

“Hey babe. Things just went dead without you and Jay around anymore. How are you two lovebirds? Yeah in class and dying.” I replied quickly as I caught my lecturer giving me the daggers.

“Jay’s alright, he’s going back London next week. Boo L I can’t go with him. Where’s Tom? – Lea”

“Why can’t you come? L Tom’s heading back Manchester tomorrow. Apparently they still have to wait from the auditions and stuff.”

“Mum’s not letting me. She says I’ll end up pregnant with how much time I spend with Jay. Lol, sucha joke!! Hahahah. Oh yeah, same goes for Jay. He heads back next week for another round. Hell, these auditions are mental! –Lea”

I snickered at her reply and got another piercing stare from my lecturer. To be honest, these lectures are such a waste of time. I can only retain like less than half of it after class, other than that, these lecturers are just wasting their time.

“I’ll call you later babe. The old lady might just flip if she sees me texting you. Loveya xx” I quickly pressed send and tried refocusing again.

I spent the evening on the phone with Lea and dinner alone at home. I was finally getting started on my assignments when there was a knock at the door.

“Heya Erny! Busy?” Tom greeted cheerfully when I opened the door.

“Heyy Parker! Come in,” I ushered him in and leaned in for a hug.

“Aunt Rhi home? Have you eaten?” he started asking a stream of question.

“Yes, I’m doing fine, school was tiring though,” I mocked in reply and rolled my eyes.

“Hahahah, sorry babe,” he chuckled as he made his way to the kitchen to put the kettle on. “Tea?” he asked.

I nodded and smiled. I love how he automatically makes himself at home whenever he comes over.

“How are you then?” I asked.

“Going to miss you,” he stated and pulled a sad face. “But other than that, the management said if there’s good news, they’ll call me in a week,” he leaned over the kitchen table, grinning.

“Sounds like great news! Gonna miss you too,” I smiled and took the cup of tea he was holding out.

We took our mugs out to the living room, wanting to spend some time together before he leaves for Manchester tomorrow. He took the remote from the coffee table and switched it on, flicking channels till he ended up on some movie channel I wasn’t really paying attention to.

A beep on my phone.

“Erny, I’ll be leaving for Italy tonight. Last minute plans. I’m on the way to the airport, I’ll transfer you some grocery money and I’ll text you soon as I arrive. I am so sorry honey, won’t be gone for too long. I love you and say hi to Tom for me. – Aunt Rhi”

I outstretched my arm to Tom so that he could read my message without having me read it out loud. He looked at me, expecting a reaction but I only shrugged.

“What? She’s a fashion designer, after all. Bound to happen soon,” I said as I continued watching “Armageddon”, apparently that was the movie playing for the night.

Tom nodded and said not another word as he leaned his head on my shoulder. I relaxed and slacked in further into the couch. About an hour later, I was already dozing off on the couch and then suddenly Tom shook me awake.

“Babe, movie ended,” he chuckled as I rubbed my eyes open.

“Sorry, just tired,” I yawned. “You want to stay over?” I asked as I stretched a bit.

“I just wanted to ask you something, if that’s okay?” he asked, seriousness lacing his voice.

I nodded for him to continue.

“Would you… Erny, would you be my girlfriend?” he asked, smiling.

That definitely got me fully awake. Not to be rude but the whole no strings attached thing was just getting to me and it was comfortable. We were like best friends, with an extra edge. It, of course, crossed my mind several times to be Tom’s girlfriend but honestly, I don’t know if I could be a proper one.

“Umm… Tom… Woah,” I stuttered, not exactly knowing what I wanted to say.

“Oh,” he said quietly and stood up, avoiding eye contact.

“Tom, no, no, it’s not like that. It’s just that …” I said quietly.

“The past, is that it then? What happened to starting anew Erny?” he asked, slightly angered.

“I didn’t say anything,” I replied defensively.

“Nevermind,” his voice dropping lower as he made his way to the door.

Just when things were going great, things like these were sure to come up and spoil the moment. I had tears in my eyes but I held it in until I heard the front door clicked close.

“Maybe… it was a good day for love to die – Tom Parker” his text making me cry harder.
