Zane's POV

My shoe covered feet trudged through the sand as I made my way to my hut. It was like the other huts on the island, but much bigger.

"Mom? Dad?" I questioned as I stepped into my home. They aren't usually out late, maybe they're home?

"Right in here, sweetie!" My mother's sweet voice chimed in and I walked to the next room where I saw her and my father in the kitchen. My mother was making her famous sweets. Probably for me..she knew I loved her deserts and since today was the day I was to be crowned, why not.

"Is something the matter honey? You don't look well."

When do I ever look well.

"I'm wanted to as-tell...you both something." My mom raised an eyebrow and nodded as I spoke.

"I...need more time." As I said those words I looked up at my mother. She was shocked, scared almost. I looked at my father next, he looked the same. His expression changed from happy, to shocked, to angry now.

"What do you mean you need more time?" He spoke with his voice risen. I looked at him straight in his face.

"I need more time before I decide to take the crown." I said that as if it was simple. As if it was just that easy to understand. But no, I guess it's not. Because he stood up from his seat on the bamboo stool and walked up to me.

"You're not going to be another mistake like your brother! I've already had my greatest hope for the next Chief turn gay and then leave my home because he was uncomfortable with being Chief!"

I step back in fear and my eye widened. He hasn't gotten this mad since Garroth left.

"F-father–"

"No father me!" He spoke as he stepped closer and grabbed me by my vest. "Zane you will not be known as my son if you cannot fulfill this family's ongoing! Two sons going far from the island needs is too much!"

My mother stood there, she had a shocked expression, she could've done something, but she didn't. I'm not surprised she didn't. Her second son not wanting to be crowned, to take care of this island, it's scary. I growled and pushed my father away, I ran out the front door and the door creaked as it closed slowly. I clenched my teeth as tears streamed down my face. I need Garroth–..I need to just be alone. I need to gather my thoughts on my own.

I ran past the large mountain on our island and past Garroth's cottage. I soon made it to the far end of the island. I stopped running a bit back cause of how out of shape I was, yes growing up on an island does help you stay in shape but I was never as toned as my older brother, even Vylad, my younger brother, runs laps around the forest every morning.

I looked around, no one. Perfect. No one ever comes by this end of the island anyway. They say the waters on the far side of the island are..how you say... "haunted". Yea it's stupid. I decide to kick off my shoes into the grass then trudge through the soft sand towards the water. I stand on the wet sand as the tide washes up onto the sand, touching my feet. I watch as my tears fall from my face to the salty waters.

I walk towards the water, my eye staring ahead of me at the sun setting. It's beautiful...I step more into the water and calm myself. The water is up to my knees and I stretch slightly, it's honestly gorgeous outside, I never thought I'd appreciate being outside this much. I stare down at the water and smile. It's so peaceful.

Splash

What was that? I look up and see a tail. A fish? Weird, being this close to the shore.

Splash

Again. I see the tail again, it's closer. But I got a better look of it. It's way bigger than a fish tail. A monster? Now, a sensible person would run. I don't. I step closer into the water slightly, trying to stare through the deep water.

Splash

Agh! I fell back into the sand and feel a weight on me. Urrrg...what was that?! My eye opens and my face gets slapped with a fish tail.

"OW! Stupid fish!" I yell as I push the large fish off me, I sit up and stare down at it.

Oh. What. Am. I. Looking at.

I stare at a...mermaid...
