Zane's POV

Water splashes up onto my cotton and leather sewn clothes as I stare off into the never ending ocean ahead of me. Today's is the day. The day I'm crowned Chief of this–...my village.

Am I ready?

I question myself that all the time...I don't know if I want to be the Chief yet...I love my people, I do. But the responsibility, the passion, the work, the hard times, the–

"Baby brother!"

My eyes flick to the right of me and see my older brother on his small handmade wooden boat. He smiles widely and waves. I can't help but smile back slightly at him.

"Ahoy!" He yells towards me as his boat skims along the shallow water, getting closer to the shore as it hits the sand.

"What are you, a pirate?" I question as I smirk and step onto his boat that only fits two people for standing room.

He chuckles and sighs, "Sure I am, our great ancestors were anyhow."

I nod towards him and watch as he gets onto the sand and pushes the small boat off, launching it towards the ocean, away from the island, away from the stress. He runs through the water and jumps, climbing back onto the boat and he fixes the sail as the wind takes us off. Garroth has always had a way with sailing, he was amazing at it, the water and the wind, it worked with him. I watched as the wind blew through his golden locks, he sighed contently. I looked down and sat on the edge of the boat, I put my hand in the water gently as the wind slowed down, causing the boat to move slower. I know why Garroth refused from wanting to be Chief, he didn't want all that responsibility, he wanted this. He wanted the freedom, the right to live by his terms and not be stressed by the Island troubles. I get it now...

"Big day today...people are already gathering to see you be crowned, baby brother."

I nodded my head to let him know I heard him, but I didn't want to speak, he knows I don't.

"You know..." he started softly, "I understand how you're feeling. You don't know what to choose, and that's okay, Zane. You need more time, you have to tell them."

I bit my lip and shook my head, "Tell mother and father? No. Father will be upset, thinking his second son may also not want to be Chief? That'll kill him. And mother..."

"She'll understand, Zane. She always has." Garroth pulled the rod and turned the ship so we wouldn't go past the tide. We aren't suppose to go past the tide, not even Garroth goes past the tide. He cleared his throat and spoke up again, "Just tell them. You need more time, it will be fine." He spoke softly as we headed around the island outskirts.

"Alright." I sighed, I felt calmer. Garroth always knew when to find me when I needed a pick up. When I get too stressed and I need to relax, he knows.
