A wrinkle in time

The sky towered over the small compound. It seemed to overshadow the school in all its glory and majesty. It remained an unfathomable beast as it consumed the atmosphere. Then, it gradually turned grey.

Moments later, the sky began to cry.

————————-————————-————————-————————-————————-————

  Drip. Drip. Drip.

The raindrops danced outside the windows. The students seated in the classroom did not seem bothered by it. The students had set their sight on the exams that year. They were twelve.

  Drip. Drip. Drip.

  The rain never ceased.

A young boy peered out of the window. He looked beyond the classroom, at the sky, the trees and all that surrounded the classroom outside. He was different because he saw through the window.

  Drip. Drip. Drip.

The windows were coated in rainwater. They seemed like streaks of tears streaming down the windows. The lesson had ended.

A young girl got up. Her classmates streamed out of the classroom. She  walked diagonally across the classroom to meet the boy, who lived in the corner of the classroom. She grabbed his hands and drew closer to him. He could smell her perfume, and he remembered that scent forever.

Her eyes swirled in his, but soon the light in his would disappear.

'I like you, will you go out with me?'

A million thoughts overwhelmed his mind. Here, before him, was a fairly beautiful girl, who just confessed to him. It did not take him long to notice her almond eyes and her awkward smile. But they ran contrary to his dead eyes and did not match his constant frown.

The rain continued falling. The sky seemed to cry harder when it heard this.

A group of girls marched into the classroom. They began laughing, some were even rolling on the floor. They pointed fingers at the boy. Some even shoved him away from her.

'Hey did you seriously confess to him? That filthy thug?'

'Seriously I didn't think your taste was this bad!'

The comments followed. They flowed into my heart like rainwater down the rooftops, weeping into the soil, giving trees water. The acid rain flowed into the soil, acidifying it and killing trees that day.

A boy came. He was big and burly, more like a man. His buff muscles attracted ladies from all classes. His presence put the boy on high alert. The boy knew that danger was imminent.

He turned to the girl and took her hand. He kissed it.

'I was planning to confess to you today, but I couldn't find you,' he coated his coarse words with a falsely sweet voice.

The girl released his hand, she pointed at the boy.

'It was just a prank! Did you really think that I'd fall for such scum!'

Everyone burst out in laughter. The burly man pushed the boy aside. He fell into that dark, dark corner of the classroom. He melted away, and vanished from their sight.

The room was filled with darkness, it was the end of day. People grabbed their bags and left. 'Till there was only one person left in the classroom.

The sky seemed to resonate with him. It was also crying, crying for him. He never liked her but somehow he knew that a part of him was broken forever. It would never be mended. He cried because he wondered if anyone loved him. If anyone could hear him. If his busy parents would care to know his plight.

He heard a creek. He felt a vibration. He dense the presence of someone. The door had opened.  Someone entered the room. Her bangs barely touched her eyes, her hair was neat. Her  eyes were soft and beautiful like the sky. She walked over to the boy, who was weeping for the wound on his heart.

She  sat next to him and gave him a soft pat on the pack. Then she took out a piece of tissue and lifted his head. She wiped his tears for him.

  Then she hugged him.

The rain diminished. His crying stopped. She got up and stretched out her hand. She pulled him up. Her soft brown eyes swirled in his dead ones, creating a lively atmosphere in his heart, one that could reduce the swelling of his wound.

They packed their bags. Then she walked out of the school gates with him. Every step of the way, she was with him. They strolled past the buildings that lurked over them, under the cover of her umbrella. Down the narrow alleys. Until they reached the block the lived in.

There was a rainbow in the sky. It was the first the boy had ever seen.

'Thank you, Skye, I owe you one,' the boy told her just before they parted.

'I promise you, I'll always be there and we will always be together. Forever.'

The boy looked up at the rainbow after the rain. It was a perfect day.

It's obvious, isn't it? The boy was me. I wondered if Skye still remembered me.

Maybe she had forgotten it all.
