As the plane gained altitude under it's wings, I dozed in and out of consciousness, continually thinking of how different my future could be now. I always had a negative look on my future until this moment; Until now I figured that I would never fit in, that I would just settle for some minimum wage job, and have to just deal with life on my own, but now that the plane was reaching the peak of cruising altitude, I thought, 'Since they don't know me, they can't judge me, this could be my new life, a life of friends and laughter.' With that thought in my head, a smile pulled at the corners of my mouth as I drifted to sleep. I didn't wake up until the pilot came over the intercom again to say, "We are now flying across the Nevada-California border." Hearing this I tried to gaze out the window and take in as much of the arial landscape as possible. The plane started descending and my heart began to beat faster than I had ever felt, not out of fear, but out of excitement. As soon as the plane's wheels touched the pavement, my hands were position on my seatbelt, ready to unbuckle myself and take off running into the beautifully humid air of the costal state. It was an immense amount of time we spent just sitting on the runway, as I grew uncontrollably impatient. I tried to convince myself that I'd be at my new house in less than a few hours, but that didn't help in the slightest, I still wanted off the plane, that moment. The plane finally pulled up to the terminal and the passengers were allowed to exit. I jumped out of my seat and opened the overhead bin, grabbing the handle of my faint green suitcase. I walked out of the plane with confidence I hadn't felt for a long time. My bag clicked over every metal ridge of the terminal as I paced back and forth waiting for my parents. When they finally arrived, I didn't even wait for them to tell me where we were headed, I just started walking towards the crowds of people. "River!" My parents called after me, getting seemingly annoyed with my hurry. I turned around and moped back towards them. "Will you just calm down and wait for us? What's the rush? The apartment's still gonna be there in an hour." I grimaced at the thought of not arriving at my new home for another hour. "Anyways, we need to go pick up our car." They started walking in the direction I originally wandered in. We stopped at the baggage claim and my parents quickly found their luggage. They seemed very certain where they were headed, so I didn't question when we walked in a circle, then another circle, I assumed they knew where we were going, but they didn't so we ended up having to ask security officer where the rent-a-car pickup was. Somehow they had managed to waste an extra twenty-something minutes. We eventually managed to find the car place and ended up with a Prius. My dad popped the trunk and tossed our luggage in. I ducked into the small car and crosse my legs on the seat, blatantly ignoring the safety restraint. The car started slowly rolling away from the airport with my dad behind the wheel. My mom turned to me, "Are you excited?" I nodded and stared out the window, as we got farther and farther from the airport, the city seemed more magnificent. We drove for about an hour before I fell asleep, by the time I woke up, I had lost track of time and realized that we were at our new apartment. My parents must have seen how tired I was and just brought all my stuff up for me, letting me sleep. When I was aware enough to take in my surroundings, I stumbled up 5 flights of stairs to reach my apartment, the door was unlocked so I slowly turned the handle and pushed it open. The place was already furnished with somewhat modern pieces. My mom was lying on the couch flipping through channels and barely even looked up when I walked in. I strolled past her and walked onto the balcony, which had been open all day to cool down the apartment. It was sunset as I looked out over the city, finally appreciating something than my own presence. What appeared to be a few miles away, I saw a school with an American flag flapping in front of it. I knew in my core that at that brick building, my life would change.
